Sung Dong-il is a highly acclaimed and prolific South Korean actor, born on April 27, 1967, in Incheon, South Korea. He began his acting career in theater in 1987 before gaining wider recognition after being recruited at the 1991 SBS open talent auditions. Initially known for his comedic and dialect-speaking roles, particularly as "Red Socks" in the drama Eun-shil (1998-1999), he actively sought to diversify his roles to avoid typecasting. Sung Dong-il has since become one of South Korea's most reliable and beloved supporting actors, known for his versatile performances across various genres, from comedy and romance to action, drama, and thrillers. His film career truly took off with the hit romantic comedy 200 Pounds Beauty in 2006, and he has starred in numerous successful films such as Take Off (2009), The Client (2011), Mr. Go (2013), and The Accidental Detective series (2015, 2018). On television, he has received critical praise for his roles in dramas like The Slave Hunters (2010) and as the gruff but caring father in the widely popular "Reply" series (Reply 1997, Reply 1994, Reply 1988). Beyond acting, Sung Dong-il gained a new surge of popularity when he and his children appeared on the reality/variety show Dad! Where Are We Going? He continues to be active in both film and television, with recent works including Forbidden Fairytale (2025). He has been married to Park Kyung-hye since 2003 and they have three children.
