Taika Waititi is a New Zealand filmmaker, actor, and comedian known for his distinctive blend of humor, heart, and cultural storytelling. Born Taika David Cohen on August 16, 1975, in Wellington, New Zealand, he is of Māori (Te Whānau-ā-Apanui) and Russian-Jewish descent. He began his career in the late 1990s, gaining attention with his short film Two Cars, One Night (2004), which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Live Action Short Film. Waititi's feature film debut, Eagle vs Shark (2007), was followed by the critically acclaimed Boy (2010), which became New Zealand's highest-grossing local film at the time. He continued to build on his success with Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016), a comedy-drama that also became New Zealand's top-grossing film and received widespread acclaim . His international breakthrough came with Thor: Ragnarok (2017), where he revitalized the Marvel Cinematic Universe with his unique comedic style. He returned to the MCU with Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) and voiced the character IG-11 in The Mandalorian (2019), for which he received an Emmy nomination . In 2019, Waititi wrote and directed Jojo Rabbit, a satirical anti-hate film set during World War II.
