He is a protégé of the legendary martial arts choreographer Yuen Woo-Ping and is well-known for his close friendship and working relationship with Keanu Reeves, having served as his martial arts teacher and trainer for the Matrix films.Born in Chengdu, Sichuan, China, Chen began his martial arts training at a young age, enrolling in the Sichuan Wushu Team by the age of 18. He excelled in martial arts, winning the National Youth Martial Arts Competition in China. In 1996, he moved to the United States to further pursue his passion, though he faced initial struggles, sometimes having to work odd jobs like washing dishes to make ends meet.His film career began in 1998 when he joined Yuen Woo-Ping's fight choreography team as an assistant for The Matrix. This marked the beginning of his impactful contributions to Hollywood action cinema. He went on to work as a choreographer for films like Charlie's Angels (2000), Once in the Life (2000), and Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003).
