Tom Savini
Thomas Vincent Savini, born November 3, 1946, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is a highly influential American prosthetic makeup artist, actor, stunt performer, and film director, earning him monikers like "The Sultan of Splatter" and "The Godfather of Gore." His interest in makeup effects was inspired by silent film star Lon Chaney. Savini attended Point Park University before enlisting in the U.S. Army as a combat photographer during the Vietnam War; his exposure to real-life wartime trauma and injuries later influenced the gory realism of his special effects work. His professional career took off with his collaboration with director George A. Romero on films like Martin, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, and Creepshow. Savini is also celebrated for designing the original look of Jason Voorhees in Friday the 13th (parts I and IV). Beyond effects, he has an extensive acting resume, including roles in Dawn of the Dead, From Dusk Till Dawn, and a cameo in Queens of the Dead (2025), and he directed the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead. Savini also founded a Special Make-Up Effects Program at the Douglas Education Center in Pennsylvania to teach aspiring artists his craft.
