Tracee Ellis Ross, born Tracee Joy Silberstein on October 29, 1972, in Los Angeles, California, is an American actress, singer, producer, and television host. She is the daughter of actress and Motown recording artist Diana Ross and music business manager Robert Ellis Silberstein. Ross attended the Institut Le Rosey in Switzerland and The Dalton School in Manhattan before graduating from Brown University in 1994 with a theatre degree. Her breakthrough role came when she was cast as the lead character, Joan Carol Clayton, in the UPN/CW comedy series Girlfriends, which ran from 2000 to 2008, earning her two NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series. Following this, she also starred as Dr. Carla Reed on the BET sitcom Reed Between the Lines, securing her third NAACP Image Award. From 2014 to 2022, Ross starred as Dr. Rainbow "Bow" Johnson in the ABC comedy series Black-ish, a role for which she received numerous accolades, including a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy, multiple NAACP Image Awards, and five Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Her film credits include Hanging Up (2000), Daddy's Little Girls (2007), and The High Note (2020), for which she also recorded the soundtrack album. Beyond acting, Ross is the founder and CEO of Pattern Beauty, a hair-care line developed for curly hair. She also co-created the Black-ish prequel spin-off Mixed-ish and has been honored with a "Disney Legend" award. Ross also holds honorary doctorates from Brown University and Spelman College.
