Ty Burrell is an American actor and comedian, best known for his portrayal of Phil Dunphy on the hit sitcom Modern Family. Born on August 22, 1967, in Grants Pass, Oregon, Burrell earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Penn State University. He began his career with roles in films like Black Hawk Down (2001) and Dawn of the Dead (2004), and appeared in Broadway productions such as Macbeth. Burrell's breakout role came in 2009 when he was cast as Phil Dunphy on Modern Family. His performance earned him five Emmy nominations and two wins for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series . The show concluded in 2020 after 11 successful seasons. Following Modern Family, Burrell voiced characters in animated films like Finding Dory (2016) and Storks (2016), and starred in the comedy Rough Night (2017). He also co-created and starred in the web series Boondoggle (2016), which received positive reviews and earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Actor in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series. In 2024, Burrell starred in and executive produced the comedy series Forgive and Forget for ABC. However, the network ultimately decided not to move forward with the show, citing its darker tone as a factor in the decision. Outside of acting, Burrell is an entrepreneur, owning a restaurant in Park City, Utah, and two bars in Salt Lake City. He and his wife, Holly, a pastry chef and former actor, have two adopted daughters and split their time between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City.
