Ulrich Tukur

Ulrich Tukur (born Ulrich Gerhard Scheurlen on July 29, 1957, in Viernheim, Germany) is a distinguished German actor, musician, and author, renowned for his versatile performances across film, television, and theater. Tukur spent his youth near Hannover and completed his final secondary school examinations in 1977. During a student exchange, he earned a high school diploma in Boston, Massachusetts, where he met his first wife, Amber Wood. He later studied German, English, and history at the University of Tübingen and pursued acting at the Stuttgart State University of Music and Performing Arts from 1980 to 1983. While still a student, he made his film debut in Die Weiße Rose (1982), portraying resistance fighter Willi Graf. Tukur's theater career includes significant roles at the Freie Volksbühne Berlin under Peter Zadek and as a staff actor at Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg from 1985 to 1995. He was named "Actor of the Year" in 1986 by German theater critics. From 1995 to 2003, he co-directed the Hamburger Kammerspiele theater. He has also performed at the Salzburg Festival in the title role of Jedermann from 1999 to 2001. In film, Tukur is acclaimed for his roles in The Lives of Others (2006), John Rabe (2009), The White Ribbon (2009), and Solaris (2002). His portrayal of Oberstleutnant Anton Grubitz in The Lives of Others earned him the German Film Award for Best Supporting Actor. He has also appeared in In the Fade (2017), which won a Golden Globe. Since 2010, Tukur has portrayed Commissioner Felix Murot in the German Tatort series, known for his complex, introspective character. He has received multiple accolades, including the Golden Bear at the Berlinale, the German Film Prize, and the Bavarian Film Award. Beyond acting, Tukur is a musician and author. In 1995, he founded the dance band "Ulrich Tukur & Die Rhythmus Boys," performing music from the early 20th century. He has released several albums and tours internationally. In 2007, he published his debut collection of stories, The Water Lily in the Dining Room – Venetian Stories. Tukur is fluent in German, English, Italian, and French. He has lived in Venice and now resides in Berlin. He has two daughters from his first marriage and is married to photographer Katharina John.
