Upendra Rao, popularly known as Upendra, is an Indian actor, director, producer, screenwriter, lyricist, and singer who is a prominent figure in Kannada cinema. Born on September 18, 1968, in Kundapur, Karnataka, he began his career as an assistant director and writer under the tutelage of director Kashinath. His directorial debut, Tharle Nan Maga (1992), was a successful comedy film, and he went on to direct other cult classics like Shhh! (1993) and Om (1995).Upendra's transition to acting was a major turning point in his career. He made his debut as a lead actor in his self-directed film A (1998), which became a massive critical and commercial hit. He is known for his unique and unconventional style, often portraying complex characters with a philosophical undertone. His film Upendra (1999) further solidified his image as a "Real Star" and a director with a distinct vision.Beyond his work in Kannada cinema, he has also acted in a few Telugu and Tamil films. He is also a politician and founded the Uttama Prajaakeeya Party (UPP), which is based on the principles of citizen-centric administration.
