V R Dinesh, formerly and often still referred to by his popular stage name "Attakathi" Dinesh, is an Indian actor who has established himself as a reliable performer in Tamil cinema, celebrated for his compelling portrayals in realistic and character-driven films. Born as Vellore Ravi Dinesh, he gained his breakthrough in the industry with the lead role in director Pa. Ranjith’s debut film, the 2012 coming-of-age romantic comedy Attakathi, which earned him the moniker that stuck. Dinesh followed this success with highly acclaimed performances, showcasing his versatility, notably as a visually challenged man in Cuckoo (2014), a role for which he received immense critical praise and was even compared to actor Kamal Haasan. His most notable film, however, is the National Award-winning Visaranai (2016), directed by Vetri Maaran, where his powerful supporting role as Paandi earned him global recognition after the film premiered at the Venice Film Festival. He has collaborated frequently with the Pa. Ranjith camp, appearing in the Rajinikanth-starrer Kabali (2016) and recently starring as the tribal man Sadaiyan (alongside Kalaiyarasan) in the 2025 socio-political thriller Thandakaaranyam. His recent acclaimed performance as a middle-aged father in Lubber Pandhu (2024) and his quiet decision to adopt the screen name V R Dinesh mark a new chapter in his career, which continues to be defined by his commitment to impactful roles.
