Vasilis Marmatakis
Vasilis Marmatakis is a distinguished Greek graphic designer based in Athens, widely celebrated for his minimalist and evocative film posters, particularly his long-standing collaboration with director Yorgos Lanthimos. Marmatakis's posters are not just promotional tools; they are considered integral to the films' visual identity, renowned for their use of distinct typography, subtle collage elements, and a masterful ability to convey the mood and metaphorical themes of a film without revealing the plot. He has designed the posters for nearly all of Lanthimos's films since Dogtooth in 2009, including The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, The Favourite, and Poor Things.Born in Greece, Marmatakis studied graphic design at London's Camberwell College of Arts and the Royal College of Art in the 1990s. He later worked as an art director in advertising in Athens, where he met Lanthimos and screenwriter Efthymis Filippou, leading to their creative partnership. In 2003, he co-founded the design studio MNP, before going freelance in 2009. In addition to his film work, Marmatakis's portfolio includes visual identities for architects, book covers, and other art projects. He is also a visiting lecturer at the Vakalo College of Art & Design in Athens. His works have been published and exhibited internationally and are part of the permanent collections of prestigious institutions such as the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich.
