William Hurt (March 20, 1950 – March 13, 2022) was a celebrated American actor known for his intense, introspective performances and a career that spanned more than four decades. Born in Washington, D.C., he was educated at Tufts University and later trained at the Juilliard School, laying the foundation for his distinguished acting career. Hurt made his film debut in Altered States (1980), but rose to prominence with his magnetic performance in Body Heat (1981). He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985) and received additional Oscar nominations for Children of a Lesser God (1986), Broadcast News (1987), and A History of Violence (2005). In the 2000s, Hurt became widely recognized for his portrayal of General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in The Incredible Hulk and several later MCU films. Known for his intellectual and often brooding characters, he also earned acclaim on television and stage. Hurt faced personal challenges, including a highly publicized relationship with actress Marlee Matlin and a battle with terminal prostate cancer, which led to his death in 2022 at age 71. His legacy endures as one of Hollywood’s most gifted and thoughtful performers.
