Born on December 11, 1984, in Los Angeles, California, Xosha Kai Roquemore is an American actress known for her sharp comedic timing and versatile dramatic performances. Her unique first name was chosen by her father, director Cliff Roquemore, who was inspired by the Xhosa people of South Africa. She began her acting journey in the ninth grade at The Amazing Grace Conservatory before moving to New York City to attend the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. Roquemore first gained major critical recognition for her breakout role as Jo Ann in the Academy Award-winning 2009 film Precious. Following her film debut, she became a mainstay on television, most notably as a series regular on the hit sitcom The Mindy Project, where she played the hilariously blunt nurse Tamra Webb for five seasons. Her television career is extensive, including recurring roles on Black Monday, I’m Dying Up Here, and a leading role in Ava DuVernay’s romantic anthology series Cherish the Day.
