Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is an American actor renowned for his versatile performances across film, television, and theater. Born on July 15, 1986, in New Orleans, Louisiana, he was raised in the Magnolia Projects and later moved to Oakland, California. A gifted athlete and self-described "geek," he attended McClymonds High School, where he was also prom king. He went on to study architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, and later earned a Master of Fine Arts from the Yale School of Drama. Before pursuing acting, Abdul-Mateen worked as a city planner in San Francisco . Abdul-Mateen's acting career began in 2016 with the Netflix series The Get Down, where he portrayed Clarence "Cadillac" Caldwell. He gained further recognition for his role as Black Manta in Aquaman (2018) and its sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023). His portrayal of Dr. Manhattan in HBO's Watchmen (2019) earned him an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series. He also starred in The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020), Candyman (2021), and The Matrix Resurrections (2021). In 2022, Abdul-Mateen made his Broadway debut in the revival of Suzan-Lori Parks' play Topdog/Underdog, earning a Tony Award nomination for Best Leading Actor in a Play. He is set to lead Marvel's Disney+ series Wonder Man, portraying the titular character Simon Williams . Known for his commitment to authenticity, Abdul-Mateen often incorporates his personal experiences and perspectives into his roles, aiming to portray Black stories with honesty and depth.
