Yorgos Lanthimos is a highly acclaimed Greek film director, screenwriter, and producer, widely recognized for his distinctive and often unsettling cinematic style. Born in Athens in 1973, he initially pursued a career in basketball and business before studying film and television direction. His early work includes a wide range of projects, from music videos and commercials to experimental theater plays.Lanthimos gained international attention with his 2009 film, Dogtooth, a surreal psychological drama that earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best International Feature Film and won the Un Certain Regard prize at the Cannes Film Festival. This film, along with his subsequent work, helped define a genre known as the "Greek Weird Wave."He made his English-language debut with the 2015 absurdist black comedy, The Lobster, which won the Jury Prize at Cannes and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. His career has been marked by a number of successful collaborations with prominent actors, including Colin Farrell in The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017), and more recently, Emma Stone, with whom he has worked on a series of critically lauded films.His film The Favourite (2018) garnered widespread acclaim and multiple accolades, including a Best Director nomination at the Academy Awards and a BAFTA for Outstanding British Film. He continued this success with Poor Things (2023), which won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and received multiple Academy Awards, including Best Actress for Emma Stone. His other recent films include the anthology film Kinds of Kindness (2024) and the remake Bugonia (2025).
