Yvonne Anuli Orji is a Nigerian-American actress, comedian, and writer, born on December 2, 1983, in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Raised in Laurel, Maryland, her parents, like many immigrant parents, expected her to pursue a career in medicine or law. She earned a bachelor's degree in liberal arts and a master's degree in public health from George Washington University. However, she found her true calling in comedy while participating in a beauty pageant in graduate school.Orji's career took off with her role as Molly Carter on the critically acclaimed HBO series Insecure (2016–2021). The role earned her a Primetime Emmy Award nomination and three NAACP Image Award nominations. In addition to her acting, she has released comedy specials, including Momma, I Made It! (2020), and is the author of the book Bamboozled by Jesus: How God Tricked Me Into the Life of My Dreams (2021). She has appeared in films like Night School (2018) and the Vacation Friends series. She has also been cast in the upcoming film The Wrong Paris (2025).Outside of her creative work, Orji is known for her humanitarian efforts, having spent time working in Liberia with an organization that helps prevent the spread of teen pregnancy and HIV/AIDS. She is also an ambassador for (RED) and a Literacy Champion for Jumpstart.
