Zhang Hanyu (张涵予), born on 19 December 1964 in Beijing, is one of China’s most celebrated character actors. After graduating from the Central Academy of Drama in 1988, he began his career as a voice actor, dubbing major Hollywood movies like The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Troy, and Shark Tale . His early on-screen appearances included supporting roles in Feng Xiaogang’s blockbusters—Cell Phone, A World Without Thieves, and Big Shot’s Funeral—earning him the nickname "Feng Xiaogang's imperial film extra". His breakout came in 2007 with the war drama Assembly, where he portrayed Captain Gu Zidi, a role that catapulted him to national fame and won him the coveted Grand Slam of Chinese acting awards (Golden Horse, Golden Rooster, Hundred Flowers, and Huabiao) . Since then, Zhang has cemented his status as a reliable screen hero in films including The Taking of Tiger Mountain (2014), Operation Mekong (2016), The Great Wall (2016), The Captain (2019), and Chinese Doctors (2021) . More recently, he starred as Captain Zhao Qihang in the 2025 submarine thriller Operation Hadal and headlines upcoming films like The Legend Hunters. Known for his commanding screen presence and versatile performances, Zhang frequently portrays disciplined authority figures—such as soldiers, police officers, and adventurers—earning both critical and popular acclaim. He has received multiple acting accolades throughout his career and serves as Vice President of the China Film Association.
