Do they remember being a child?
Spoiler alerts! I give away some stuff in this review so reader beware!I really wanted to like this movie but there was so much wrong with it that made it almost painful to watch.1. The father. He has an unwanted client come in, sees blood on a sheet of paper in the session and leaves abruptly to call the police. In doing so he unwittingly leaves the man who he is worried about to walk through his house.Throughout the whole movie we see very little of him in the house making one to wonder if the kids live alone there. Which is weird considering they just lost their mother in a car accident one would think they would almost be clingy or he would.2.The youngest daughterShe is supposedly scared of the dark:We see this at the beginning as she leaves a lot of lights on and carries a moon light around and rolls it into spots where the darkness is too dark for her.Yet throughout the movie she is in darkness of her own volition. She wakes up to her closet door being thrown open and hears and sees something crawl under her bed but doesn’t scream for anyone. She instead rolls her moon light under her bed and upon seeing something there gets off her bed and quietly goes to her sister’s room to tell her while standing in the hall. As an adult, I would have screamed and went running after seeing what she saw.3. The oldest daughterShe goes to school after having missed a month and when she goes to her locker the lunch she had a month ago is there and spoiled but not to the point one would expect after a month. Her friends, are frenemies. Honestly if this is what passes for friends with kids in today’s society, I think our nation is doomed. They were completely unsympathetic about the protagonist having lost her mom to the point where they called her “drama”. They acted as though they tolerated her at best including the protagonists besty. The first families house, wife and situation:The husband had to go talk to someone and then promptly finds a closet to die in.The wife in the first family attacked lives in the house that looks like it hasn’t been cleaned in months but she has no issue living like an hoarder. The house itself has roots and vines that look awful yet no one seems to mind this. The wife shoots a shotgun at the boogeyman right beside the protagonists ear and yet she was able to hear everything after that without any disruption. There are so many issues that I had with this movie that made it completely impossible to believe and none of them were the monster! I gave it two stars for what could have been.

More suspenseful than I thought it would be
This was a great suspenseful thriller. I love watching any type of what I call scary movies. This was a great watch with my husband on the couch after the kids go to bed. I definitely wouldn’t let kiddos who are not mature enough to handle the anxiety watch it.

Scary AF!
Nothing like the 2005 boogeyman where the lead character is literally married to his flashlights to ward off the darkness or its sequels but this was one was a really good movie that scared the crap out of me! I’d definitely recommend and hope there is a sequel. It should be considering the last scene leaves room for one!

Kinda “meh”
Stephen King has written some really good short stories and some soso ones as well. This movie is based on one of his really good ones. It gave the reader the same sense of immediacy regarding something as stupid as The Boogeyman that ‘Salem’s Lot gave regarding the notion of vampires. This film adaptation starts off bone chilling. The opening scene really gets me wondering how this managed to pass with a PG-13 rating. To be fair, I haven’t finished watching this film, and I think it’ll probably pick up as I get back to it and venture further but I can already sense that this film just does not do the original source material justice. It follows roughly the same narrative, so far anyway, not *exactly* — obviously they need to deviate it from it at least somewhat in order to fill 90+/- minutes worth of time but it’s just not as convincing. Part of that is the fact that it’s being presented as it’s own event. The Boogeyman, at least when I stumbled on it as part of 1978’s NIGHT SHIFT collection, was in the midst of a bunch of other stories that had varying levels of intrigue. It was a unique blend of chocolate within a box of rather good chocolates. It was not presented as being a steak dinner or a artfully prepared dish of greens. And another thing is the length at which an audience is likely to go to believe something that, honestly, is just a bunch of nonsense. The original short story was like, what, 20,?, pages, give or take (depending on how old your copy is, you might have ended up with one of those modern ish paperback editions where each row of letters takes up half the page) and most readers can probably consume it in 30 minutes if not way less. This is not a short film. The guy who made LIGHTS OUT had the same problem when he ventured to turn his original short film into a feature length effort; he had to sacrifice quality in order to make quantity. Honestly, I’m glad he did, because I had no knowledge of the short film and if I can find the original short, I really would prefer to see that rather than the drawn out melodramatic full length film. Like I said in my overview, it’s not a BAD movie. But it sure as heck is not a 5 star film. People giving this 5 stars…I have to wonder what they’d give a movie like THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE or THE EXORCIST…

Entertaining!
I don’t find any of the modern horror movies really scary anymore. This one had a few good jumps and scares. Not an Academy award winner, but I did enjoy the movie. I liked the young actors in it, and hope to see them more often. Liked this plot line. Again, a fun movie… Not anything you need to concentrate on – just watch, have some popcorn and turn off the lights. Boo!!!
