    Scared All The Way Around

‘The Strangers : Chapter 1’ is located in the fictional town of Venus, Oregon. ‘The Strangers : Chapter 1’ is really chilling because the outer world presents an intelligence that connects spheres of preying on innocence without any particular consciousness interceding. Maya(Madeline Petsch) and Ryan(Froy Gutierrez) are stranded at a diner in rural Oregon. The actual shooting for ‘The Strangers : Chapter 1’ was in Bratislava, Slovakia. Like the mountainous landscape of Oregon, the region is an enchanting geography of tall orderly pines, with dense green leaves and earth hues pressing the senses to journey. The residents in the diner are both befuddled and unfriendly in manner. The tag lines at the beginning of the movie remind us that this story is real: “Based off true events”, and is the most compelling ensnarement of our senses. This particular installment of ‘The Strangers’ has the trademark no tentative pausing, no bars hold, up front taunting of the first two. The stalkers wait out destiny; then this town, with its citizens in remote corners mindfully, and karmatically, become more consequential in its wooded misted mystery, astronomically. This setting of the populace in martial allegiance, to who knows what, has been a rallying pulp device for many great horror excursions, campy and naive. ‘Race With The Devil’ comes to mind, but also, I am reminded of the strange actions of people in some Steven King movies. ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ also, was “based on a true story”, but with ‘The Strangers : Chapter 1’, I think the writer Bryan Bertino has a few different incidents in which he fashioned some of his terrors around, and not so much a specific single story, like the Texas one, of “Chainsaw Massacre”. ‘The Strangers : Chapter 1’ is a recipe of nerve-tease decadence.

    It’s Alright

The movie is a literal remake of the original film with a few slight changes that leave nothing interesting or new to say about the story. I still had fun with it though. It’s cheesy and can be scary at times but nothing too terrifying. It’s a decent remake that could use a lot more storytelling and development to improve the overall narrative and experience.

If you haven’t watched, PLZ read (I will post spoilers) :

First and foremost- this movie is NOT a prequel, nor is it a sequel. It is its own separate beginning to a 3 part series they’re putting out. That’s very important to know.Unfortunately, no one told me, so I watched it assuming it was a prequel (because the title literally says “chapter one”), so it kind of ruined the experience for me from the jump. With that said, had I known it wasn’t a prequel and was actually “the first movie in a new trilogy” prior to watching it, I probably would’ve enjoyed it much more, with a whole new perspective to give…so hopefully that helps someone if you haven’t watched it yet.Stop reading here if you haven’t seen it yet. I don’t want to spoil anything for you.—————————————————Spoiler – ish / rambling warning ⚠️—————————————————I was initially very interested in this movie due to Madelaine Petsch being in it. The actors were great. Richard Brake was great as the sheriff (I do wish we would’ve been able to see more of the other characters). I know all 3 movies have already been filmed, but I don’t know how quickly they’ll be released, since the first one just came out. Hopefully they release them fairly quickly, otherwise it’s going to flop, big time.Pros:+ the actors / cast were great+ I love how they went back to “The Strangers” roots, with it just being about one couple trying to survive the night in the middle of nowhere, while being hunted by 3 murderous strangers— VS whatever they did in “Strangers: Prey at Night” with the family + a trailer park + a random pool.+ there were a couple of good jump scares, but if you’re a horror movie fanatic (like I claim to be), then this movie will not scare you. It had a couple of potentially great scenes, but they were predictable.+ I’m glad I watched it, it was worth a watch.+Madelaine Petsch is a brilliant actress and I adore her for branching out. She’s extremely talented.+ It’s a million times better than Strangers: Prey at NightCons:- I personally can’t see myself watching it a second or third time (like I can with the very first Strangers movie), and I watched it with an open mind from start to finish.- The main characters have HORRIBLE survival instincts. They made maybe one or two decent choices, but the majority of the decisions were cringeworthy and I found myself temporarily rooting for the strangers (lol).- I would give it 0 stars for originality.- If you’ve seen the first Strangers movie, then you’ve seen this movie. There were a handful of notable differences, but overall, it’s almost the exact same.^ With that said, I HOPE that last con I listed was intentional, and they’re just redoing the movies to make up for the absolutely awful sequel (yes, I am still bitter about strangers 2: prey at night. It was one of the worst sequels I’ve seen, and I took it very personal for some reason lol).~*Anyway, best case scenario would be if this movie was written to be like the original, then the second one will come out and hopefully be 100000x better than Strangers 2: Prey at Night (so we can forget it ever existed), then the third /final movie will wrap everything up, nice and neat (bloody and gory), with zero survivors and/or cliffhangers, as a nice little bow on top. That would be the most respectful thing to do, in my opinion, in regards to how amazing and impactful the original one was. I pray they do not drag the original through the mud while trying to make a franchise out of something that wasn’t meant to be a franchise. The randomness of the killing, the fact that it could truly happen to any one, anywhere, any time, is what makes it so unsettling.I recommend the movie. It’s worth a watch. I understand they’re trying to “create something new and different” (even though it’s already been done, almost exactly the same as their first attempt, so I’m not sure how that’s doing something “new”, but go off, I guess). & maybe this trilogy will be terrifying to current and future generations, who knows. My opinion is slightly biased, because I loved the original so much, and I had such high hopes for the prequel, that when it botched—it just ruined any hope for future remakes of The Strangers.I apologize for the rambling novel. Here’s to praying chapters 2&3 are original, exciting, terrifying, fun to watch, and not overly predictable knock offs. Salut 🍻
