For the past year, Sandra, her husband Samuel, and their eleven-year-old son Daniel have lived a secluded life in a remote town in the French Alps. When Samuel is found dead in the snow below their chalet, the police question whether he was murdered or committed suicide. Samuel’s suspicious death is presumed murder, and Sandra becomes the main suspect. What follows is not just an investigation into the circumstances of Samuel’s death but an unsettling psychological journey into the depths of Sandra and Samuel’s conflicted relationship. Anatomy of a Fall (The Criterion Collection) Blu-ray
The closer we look, the less we know in Justine Triet’s masterful, Oscar-winning Anatomy of a Fall, an eerily riveting courtroom thriller that examines the line where truth becomes fiction and fiction becomes truth. When Sandra Voyter (a transfixing Sandra Hüller), a writer who turns the material of her life into autofiction, is put on trial for the suspicious death by defenestration—or was it suicide?—of her husband, it opens up an inquiry that will turn a troubled home inside out. Tapping into the minimalist intensity of a chamber drama—and using intricate, elliptical editing—Triet constructs a mystery that is ultimately less about a death than about the hidden lives we lead. Excellent acting, but disappointed with story, script
I’ve collected 40 Criterion titles in past 3 years and this is the only title I truly regret buying….one of those blind buys where I should have watched first on streaming or rental. The lead female actress is stellar, and first half was really interesting, but then it started to drag with the over done courtroom sequences, with the story/script descending into unbelievability. But I thought an ending surprise or revelation, twist, might salvage the experience. But just a fizzle with no closure at the end.

Usual Criterion Top Quality
Not much to add to disc audio and video quality, as always it’s superb in every way. However the movie story is tough to classify, less a mystery thriller, more a portrayal of the French justice system which works quite differently to ours. I thought it was excellent others may differ.

Shakespeare in the Court
Is it an average courtcase , is it about a killing , no , it’s about the depth of human relation ships , arguments about truthand memories , and a child , a detective of the human soul , fantastic acting , very fine directing , you will be there .

Surprising film well worth seeing
Very original plot that is well acted and directed. On the surface, it’s a murder mystery but, in reality, it’s an exploration of a marriage that seems to mirror the intricacies of a true-to- life relationship. Nothing in the film is predictable. It approximates a real life situation so well that it’s difficult to believe that it is a crafted artwork.

Well crafted movie but did it have to be a Criterion Collection?
This is an engrossing, well made movie with great performances. However, it hardly makes sense to use the Criterion label to market at a higher price.

Good but ultimately unsatisfying
Well-acted film, for sure. Deep dive into a relationship. But ultimately the resolution to the courtroom drama comes to an anticlimactic end.Maybe I’ve become too accustomed to did-she-or-didn’t-she thrillers with a button or twist at the end. But AOAF’s dramatic build-up has all the air let out of it by a character whose actions at the end were withheld until then for no logical except to tease the viewer.Good acting all around, but the movie’s whole is less than the sum of its parts.

Excellent film you might not have heard about
This multiple award-winning film is engrossing throughout. Part is spoken in French (with subtitles), part in English. French court procedures are shown to be very different from American courts, interesting to compare if you’ve experienced jury duty, testified, or seen U.S. court cases presented. A second enclosed CD includes interesting interviews and unused scenes.

Murder mystery with soul
As always, Criterion does a great job with the presentation, packaging, and quality. The film itself is ostensibly a murder mystery, but the family drama rises above it and becomes the focus in a compelling and touching way. The acting is also amazing.
