From the director of Fright Night!

The “chills come thick and fast” as voodoo and terror meet within an innocent-looking doll named “Chucky” inhabited by the soul of a serial killer who isn’t ready to die. From the Director of Fright Night comes a “clever, playful” (The New York Times) and stylish thriller with “excellent special effects” (Leonard Maltin) and heart-pounding suspense guaranteed to scare! After 6-year-old Andy Barclay’s (Alex Vincent) babysitter Maggie is violently pushed out of a window to her death, nobody believes him when he says that “Chucky,” his new birthday doll, did it! Until things start going terribly wrong dead wrong. And when an ensuing rampage of gruesome murders lead Chicago Police Detective Michael Norris(Chris Sarandon) back to the same toy, he discovers that the real terror has just begun. The deranged doll has plans to transfer his evil spirit into a living human being young Andy after notorious “Lakeshore Strangler” Charles Lee Ray(Brad Dourif)transfers his soul by voodoo magic into a Cabbage Patch like “Good Guy” doll after being shot near to death by Chicago P.D. where Charles presumably burned to death in the toy store explosion which was similar to how the wicked murderous Freddy Krueger(Robert Englund)preyed on his victims after being burned alive to a crisp by enemies who presumed him to be dead in the original Wes Craven’s A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET which was released in the Fall of 1984.Eventually, Chucky discovers from a witch doctor John Simonsen “Dr. Death”(Raymond Oliver)that the only way he can get out of the dolls body is to possess the first person he revealed his secret to which is Andy whom Chucky desperately stalks the more Chucky becomes human & trapped in the doll the longer he stays in it.CHILD’S PLAY was also released in the Fall of 1988 with moderate success that was produced on a 9,000,000 budget & has now since developed a cult following among fans of the horror genre just like HALLOWEEN, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, FRIDAY THE 13TH, etc. along with the fact that “Chucky” was the most relentless villainous murderer since Freddy Krueger & CHILD’S PLAY did so well during it’s theatrical release in November of 1988 that CHILD’S PLAY II came out in theatres in the Fall of 1990 which wasn’t too shabby of a sequel in fact.Rumor also has it that the “Good Guy Dolls” were based on the My Buddy dolls created by Hasbro, but it was confirmed by creator Don Mancini that the “Good Guy Dolls” were modeled after the Cabbage Patch Kids, plus there were a large crowd of people protesting against this horror flick speculating that it would incite violence in children.

    Good transfer

Picture quality is good, not perfect in HDR, but remember the movie is from 1988. HDR picture from 4K Shout is quite better than SDR picture from Blu-ray Arrow but for me Blu-ray is too good quality.

    Campy fun

I avoided this movie for years, thinking it would be too dark and just over-the-top scary: totally isn’t. It’s fun, and funny! Well done, good script and physical stunts. I laughed a lot. 😀 Nearly 40-years old, it holds up.

    Hi I’m Chucky!! Wanna play?!?!

The Film: Child’s PlayYear Made: 1988Overview: The Lakeshore Strangler is chased down by a detective. The detective shoots the famous killer and he dies, or does he? Determined for revenge, even after death, the killer is able to send his spirit into a doll right before he dies. A determined mother finally gets her child the doll that that he thought he always wanted. The child soon finds out that his doll named Chucky is not your average play time doll as will soon be discovered!Package: 5 Stars When I bought this DVD, I had not idea this package would be so cool. This is not just a regular cover, it comes with a hologram cover with Chucky on the front. When you turn the cover slightly, Chucky will just look at you with a innocent look on his face. When you move it some, he will look at you with wide eyes and a knife will appear in his hand! This alone was such a great surprise to receive. The cover slides off and then a normal looking DVD is inside. The DVD itself looks cool with graphics on the disc itself. The holder holds the disc in place very well, and yet it is the push button pop out kind, so it’s easy to remove from holder also. I wish all holders were of this same type, as it would make taking out DVDs a whole lot easier. The DVD itself includes the trailer for the film as well as some cast information. There was no insert at all included when I opened the case, but all and all, this is a very nice package.Spook Meter: 3 Stars If you enjoy the whole killer doll concept as much as I do, if you enjoy a little humor mixed in as well, your going to love Child’s Play. This film has some spooky scenes too it and it’s very fun to watch. It’s not a super scary film, but what makes this all come together so well is young Andy, as well as the whole look of Chucky. This makes for a scary, and a believable concept that flows really well in the pace of events that occur as you watch this film. All the little details, really add to the creepy feeling. The TV going on when Chucky decides that he will watch the 9 ‘O’ Clock news, I love that part! It’s creepy and is a nice slow build up to more things that occur later as the pace picks up gradually faster. I don’t want to give away many details. One of the very best things that you will love is when Chucky laughs! It sticks with you, long after the film has ended and in this case, that’s a great thing.Gore/Violence Meter: 3 Stars. There is some blood/gore, but if you looking for a high blood splatter gore fest, you won’t find it here. This gets ranked 3 stars for mainly violence. If people and a doll being shot, a few fairly mildly graphic stabbings with a little blood don’t bother you, then you will be fine watching Child’s Play.Profanity Meter: 3 Strikes. There is a fair amount of bad language in this film that maybe offensive to some viewers.Sexual Meter: 1 Strike. This film is pretty much a 1 star on the sexual meter. There is zero nudity, zero bed scenes, no make out stuff what so ever. I will note one tiny part that shows nothing, but is on the suggestive side. A woman tries to ask a man for information regarding the doll. The man wants her to pay for his information, she tries to give him money but he wants her body instead. He pushes her and the suggestive part is that he wants to sexually assault her, when she is then saved by the detective. There is nothing shown, but it’s something that I just wanted to give a note of warning too about that one part.Final thoughts: I love this film! what can I say, I’m a huge Chucky fan. This is a film that I can watch over and over again. It’s fun/scary/funny horror all mixed into one film that leaves you wanting more and thinking it ended way to soon because it was just so fun to watch. If you love horror films, you can’t go wrong with this one. Give this a try, you will love Chucky! Overall, this is a 5 Star film without a doubt! I must note also that yes I would love to see Child’s Play on widescreen as well as other reviewers have stated also. This version is full screen but don’t worry. I read recently that a 20th anniversary special edition of Child’s Play is coming soon! Don’t give up hope, Chucky is going to celebrate his birthday and I’m sure he will get the widescreen treatment alone with some new extras that is sure to please any Chucky fan. Whatever you do, I suggest any fan of Chucky should for sure pick up this full frame version as well though. Trust me when I say, the hologram cover is worth the price in itself.
