A Fun X-Men Film for the Fans!
Simon Kinberg’s “Dark Phoenix” continues after the events of “X-Men: Apocalypse,” adapting Chris Claremont and John Byrne’s “Dark Phoenix Saga” for the second time now that the events of “X-Men: The Last Stand” were undone following “X-Men: Days of Future Past.”The story begins in a flashback, showing how Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) came to Xavier’s School. In the film’s present day of 1992, Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and his team have demonstrated the ways mutants may contribute to society, earning them respect and him a place in mainstream politics as well as a direct phoneline to the White House. After an emergency aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour, Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) leads the X-Men—Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Jean Grey, Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), and Quicksilver (Evan Peters)—on a dangerous mission to rescue the astronauts. A mysterious energy flare consumes the shuttle, but Jean absorbs it and the team returns to Earth, where Mystique is planning on leaving Xavier’s School due to Charles’s growing hubris. The D’Bari, an alien race led by Vuk (Jessica Chastain), come to Earth seeking the energy as Jean heads to her parents’ home, finding her father alive and learning that he abandoned her. The X-Men come to bring her back to Xavier’s and she fights them before fleeing to Genosha to seek Magneto’s (Michael Fassbender) help. He refuses because he does not want to put Genosha in danger, so Jean flees. She meets Vuk, who explains the nature of the power that Jean absorbed. Meanwhile, Beast tells Magneto of the damage Jean has done and they travel to New York to kill her while the X-Men work to save her. In the battle, the U.S. military captures both sides. The D’Bari try to recapture Jean, leading to a confrontation where Jean demonstrates her mastery of her new powers.Kinberg previously wrote “X-Men: The Last Stand,” “X-Men: First Class,” “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” and “X-Men: Apocalypse,” while this is his directorial debut. Like the previous adaptation of Claremont and Byrne’s comic story, a great deal is changed to fit the film’s 114-minute runtime. That said, Kinberg does include some nice references to the comics story, such as the D’Bari. Through Vuk’s discussion of how the cosmic energy destroyed their planet, he references the scene in “Dark Phoenix Saga” where the Phoenix destroyed their star system. He also includes a cameo of Dazzler (Halston Sage, getting the costume surprisingly accurate) and “X-Men” writer Chris Claremont. The film received a great deal of bad press and, while it’s not a faithful adaptation of “The Phoenix Saga,” it is a good psychological character study and has other nice character moments. Of the twelve “X-Men” films in Fox’s franchise, this falls somewhere in the middle in terms of overall quality. It’s certainly far more focused than “X-Men: The Last Stand.” While Kinberg’s story has something of an open-ending, Disney’s acquisition of Fox makes it the final film in the franchise. With that in mind, it makes a better ending than “X-Men: Apocalypse” and, if you like the franchise and this iteration of the cast, you’ll probably enjoy this film.

PERFECTLY FINE FILM — DON’T PAY ATTENTION TO THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS
I seriously do not understand whence comes all this negativity. This film is perfectly fine; well made, VERY well acted, well written. I cannot for the life of me see what all the hate is about. It really makes no sense. To begin, the Jean character in the previous film was truly awful. I’m not certain if that was due to the writing, the directing, the editing or the acting. But whatever the reason, the Jean character was utterly flat, uninspired, a real train wreck. But now, in Dark Phoenix, somehow, “magically”, Jean has come alive. She is fleshed out, dynamic, convincing and — I must add — masterfully portrayed. Good grief, I was chewing my nails for half the film and most of those nail-chewing moments were Jean’s.I know that there are several contributing factors that can realize either a brilliant or a failed character portrayal. I’ve no idea what changed from one film to the next, but I suspect the script and the direction might have played a significant part. Whatever the reason, in this film, I really believed Jean was a real person, being “torn apart” mentally and emotionally. She is really run through the grinder in this film — and you believe every second. Because the portrayal of this character is so spot on, so convincing, that you never doubt what she’s enduring. It is all credible. And,, more importantly, it is all understandable. You always know where you are in the progression of the story, with the locations, and with the emotional development or deterioration of each character.I cannot delve more into detail without giving away the surprises and shocks, so I’ll just say that this film is more than worth seeing. Do NOT pay any attention to the negative press this film is getting. I gladly gave it 4 stars (my maximum number for most films; 5 stars being reserved exclusively for the flawless, perfect, classic films with which we’re all familiar). I am mystified as to why so many reviews are bad. It makes no sense at all. I mean, I’m assuming that these people actually WATCHED the film, that they actually PAID ATTENTION to the story, the characters, etc. Because the only way someone could have given this film a bad review is if they’d never bothered to see it, or never bothered to pay attention to the details, thus not having given it an honest viewing. The only other reason I can think of is that these people are somehow receiving under-the-table payments or favours for their negative reviews. I don’t know.. I suppose anything’s possible these days. Although I wouldn’t like to think that matters have sunk so low. There’s just one small, nit-picky complaint I have about the film; and I had to really look carefully to find this tiny flaw, believe me. That’s how well-crafted this film is. My one complaint is the depiction of the fire Phoenix. It was just too literal; too exact. It should not have been portrayed this precisely. It should have been far more subtle. By making it so damnably literal, the filmmakers (or probably the producers) are showing what contempt they have for the audience; that they consider the audience at about the level of an ignorant 5-year-old. That’s genuinely insulting, in my opinion. Granted, I understand that much of the audience for these films is indeed this ignorant; but there’s no need to rub everybody’s nose in it.

A very good but asynchronous movie
This was a good tale offering satisfaction to the intense fans who needed to see this Marvel X-classic brought to the screen and delivering a good message (though the delivery was somewhat heavy-handed). As some others have noted, the villains were rather unexceptional and their abilities were either unremarkable or difficult to figure out, making the fight scenes rather blurry. The reboot and recastings made a younger generation of X-heroes to watch, but this last offering from Sony has left the story arc dangling. I was hoping it would lead to some circularity that would point clearly toward the original Sony X-men trilogy (which they sort-of managed with Days of Future Past) but by ending the tale the way they did, they made key aspects of the original line-up rather impossible. Another offering would be needed to resurrect and tie the various characters together and iron out the temporal loop, but the migration of the Mutant franchise to Disney will probably mean that is impossible (particularly since Disney has quite infamously shown either a reluctance or an inability to build continuity with earlier portions of its multi-story arcs).

Screw the negative reviews, “Dark Phoenix” is a cult superhero movie.
I can’t believe critics trashes this movie with so many negative reviews just like they trashed “Justice League” with mixed reviews. Well I’m telling right now that “Dark Phoenix” is a good superhero movie. I was crush when they announce that “Dark Phoenix” will be the final X-Men film due to Marvel Studios bought the copyright of X-Men from Fox. And I’m also crush when I found out Olivia Munn didn’t reprise her role as Psylocke in this movie because I thought she was smokin’ hot. This film set in 1992 (almost a decade after the events of X-Men: Apocalypse) where Professor X send the X-Men into space on a rescue mission. During the rescue mission, Jean Grey was exposed to solar flare-like energy that turn her into the Dark Phoenix and cause some chain of events including the death of Mystique that led to Beast leave the X-Men to join Magneto (a retired supervillain) & his followers to destroy Jean. Also, the X-Men have to face an shapeshifting villain known as Vuk.”Dark Phoenix” is a good movie and I don’t like the way critics trashed the movie with negative reviews. I hope they’ll be more kinder next year’s blockbuster movie “The New Mutants”. “Dark Phoenix” will forever be a cult superhero movie.

Don’t believe the critics. Watch this movie.
I don’t generally review things but had to this time. This movie has been rated unfairly. We forget that X-men comics are still a story. You wouldn’t read just the climax of a novel so why expect their plot to always be intense. Quite frankly that gets exhausting. I’ve followed marvel my entire life. There are some continuity issue but this film is one of the very few I wouldn’t mind watching more than once. This feels like a foundational origin story. The expectation of it being entirely action betrays the original purpose of the X-men. They were a medium to deal with real social issues and injustice. Don’t believe the critics. It is definitely worth the watch.

Good movie, but…
This is a pretty good movie. I especially enjoyed the special effects (& majority of the acting) in it! About the ONLY problem I have with it is that it further muddles up the time/storyline(s) from the previous Fox/X-Men flicks. But if you’re NOT a staunch observer of “comic-book lore”/continuity (like me), then you’ll probably enjoy this, as well. But if you’re a stickler about sense & continuity (even just from the movies) then this flick might be vexxing for you, also! But it IS visually pleasing tho!

“Critics” ruin another good movie.
Critics need to be abolished. That’s what this movie and others show. Throw in the politics, and corporate ownership and this is highlighted even further. This movie was great. Just as good as the prior X-men outings. Disney buying Fox may hurt any further wrap up or conclusion to this series as they may abandon this cast and rehash the series. With that in mind, it’s not the best send off to a 14 movie series, but the critics were just wrong about the movie itself. Yes, I also eye rolled at the inserted “the women do all the work around here,” but I think the failure of the recent Terminator, Ghost Busters, and Oceans films have shown that fake feminism doesn’t work. Thankfully, the rest of this film focuses on character and story and has great supporting visuals to support it. It’s not Hobbs and Shaw which is yawn visuals you can’t follow, with poor story and writing. The movie is a lot of fun, and looks stunning in 1080p let alone the 4K HDR version. 4K is incredible. If you enjoyed the prior films, you will enjoy this. Go away critics and bloggers with your single opinion.
