    Nice surprise

I remember watching this film on Amazon simply because of the previews that had me interested just from the dynamic between the two cast members. It was just so interesting seeing how they were able to act with one another and it’s one of the few films of this type that really appealed to me. Feel like it is indeed worthy of my collection among the very few romantic comedies of its kind and if anything a lot of it’s romantic comedy aspects is really due to dialogue. Genuinely really love this film.

    Funny Dialog

The dialog makes this movie. It may not be to everyone’s taste but it is often clever. The dialog is delivered at break neck speed and sometimes it took me a second to realize how funny it was. It will take a couple more viewings before I say enough is enough.

    A darkly humored romantic comedy

Frank (Keanu Reeves) and Lindsey (Wynona Ryder) are two very intelligent, very cynical people who just so happen to get a seat next to one another on a plane that seats 8. Both heavily repulsed by the other, also realize they are both on their way to the same wedding.Lindsey and Frank are both very intelligent, miserable, socially awkward individuals that find a common ground: everyone around them is leading happy lives. The dialogue is really really well done. It is this intelligently honest banter that keeps me hooked. They aren’t nice to each other, but they do tell each other the truth. The kind of chemistry and comfort they display reminded me of an old married couple that has reached an absolute level of verbal and emotional comfort. This is not for everyone. This is an unconventional romance that shows two outcasts finding belonging with one another. They start out hating the world and each other and only end up hating the world. All things considered with the harsh and honest language they both displayed, this was quite touching. It didn’t operate like most romances with a bunch of tender sentiments, flowers and a declaration of love. But what it did have felt flawed and realistic. It felt like two halves of a whole came together. My biggest complaint is the sex scene was a bit overdone and awkward. I know it fit with the rest of the story line and maintained consistency with the personalities of our characters, but it was still my least favorite scene.

    Don’t Watch When Tired!

Overall an OK movie, and I do like Keanu, but the dialogue in this movie is EVERYTHING. While the plot moves painfully slowly (for me), the dialogue is witty, fast-paced, sometimes biting, snarky, confrontational, and hostile, meaning that you REALLY have to pay attention if you’re going to follow what’s happening. This is not a movie for multi-tasking or otherwise divided attention. You will either be left wondering what happened, or wear out your remote rewinding and rewatching. And if you begin this movie the slightest bit sleepy, then just give up and turn it off, because you are guaranteed to fall asleep at some point during the show. Or, you could just go ahead and buy it instead of renting, so you can come back to it and watch as many times as you like. 😉

    Delightful

In the vein of Nora Ephron or reminds me of the Cary Grant slightly confused and doesn’t fit in persona versus the over the top goofiness of a Katherine Hepburn type in Wynona Ryder. I think this is something many older movie classics fans can appreciate. It is subtle and a feel good movie if you get the non conformist humor going on underneath. There is hope after all! I am saddened but not surprised more people don’t appreciate this movie and I am a very tough sell. I have watched this movie so many times. It is a fun ride! No matter how hard they try to loose hope they can’t help finding it. Great dialogue and smart but not over the top intelligent film you can’t help but smile! They also have real chemistry! If you are used to obvious humor and not thinking during a film and not getting involved in the feelings on screen then you will not enjoy it. It isn’t heavy. It is just a lightly, very lightly dark humor. Enough to be smart but not enough to make you feel bad. In fact it is a feel good film that gives hope and makes you feel maybe you are not the only person out there who thinks these things sometimes! That there is a nitch you fit into and you are not as alone out there. I think it shows we ALL think these things sometimes so we are NOT as different as everyone else after all. There is happiness everywhere you look!

    a pleasant surprise

Two character film, hard to carry for the actors. I would not have thought that Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves had the chops to carry it off, but they do a fine job. Their characters overshare their views on everything under the sun over the course of a weekend, and the actors have to make that not only tolerable, but a little endearing, and witheringly funny. The writing is sometimes over the top, but maybe necessarily so, as these are two easy-to-dislike people who are in a state where they are not showing anybody their best selves, plus they have flaws that are big enough to make prospective partners forget how attractive they are. The editing a little choppy, in a few scenes the comedy is cartoonish, and the overall pacing a little flat. Not a perfect little movie, but still I very much enjoyed the effort. Funny, imperfect, prone to excess, just like the antics of regular people.

Legitimately the funniest film I’ve seen in years.

If the thought of an overly verbose and formal series of hysterically inappropriate and tactless conversations between two equally yet oppositely awkward people and little else sounds boring to you, then by all means pass.If that sounds up your alley though, you’ll get a real kick out of this. This is one of those rare films that, were it not for the establishing shots, could have easily been a play and worked just as well. Only the two leads have dialogue. Literally no one else speaks. The entirely of the film consists of their discussions. It’s in turns genuinely endearing, and cringe-inducingly funny. Both actors give surprisingly physical and idiosyncratic performances that had me rolling my eyes and laughing out loud.Just when I thought the typical “Now their barriers will collapse and we’ll see them become human” trope would come to bear, instead their particularity-bordering-on-compulsion dialogue would persist without skipping a beat, hilariously juxtaposed against activities you’d never expect it to continue during. The worldviews of the characters are amusingly paradoxical – they’re pretentious, yet totally sincere; nihilistic, yet fastidious. By the end, there is some growth implied… but it can also be read as resignation.Definitely not a movie for everyone. But for what they set out to execute, it’s – in a strange way – sort of a masterpiece. One star off for a somewhat predictable ending, but getting there was very entertaining. Perfectly cast.

What if this is as good as it gets?

This is the comedy of two people who absolutely should not be together because they are polarizing opposites.Drax the Destroyer and the stereotypical Cat Lady. I thought the trailer was cute, but the movie was so much funnier than I anticipated. The locations are romantic, but the main characters are so obtusely cynical and awkward. Seriously, it’s like watching a car crash or a trainwreck happen in slow motion. -But that’s the beauty of it. That’s the very thing that makes this movie funny and enjoyable. The situations go from bad to worse, and where the two polar opposites always appear separate, over time their quirks and habits overlap and even compliment each other. It’s not a stereotypical romance film. It’s quirky, rough around the edges, and the dialog talks more about the philosophy of life and the purpose of love with sooo many sick burns and put-downs between the two.But that’s love in real life. It’s not beautiful. It’s not glamorous. The actors do a great job to sell the characters, and the director takes an interesting approach with the visuals to make some statements. This would be a good film to watch when your s.o. wants you to pick a romantic comedy, and you really don’t want to sit through a bunch of cheesy Hollywood bs. It’s also a good film to watch if you just want a movie that will make you think AND make you laugh. A similar film in tone is “As Good As It Gets”.I wouldn’t recommend this to people with ADHD or people who only watch movies with explosions. Also, I wouldn’t recommend it to people who are fans of cheesy, predictable, “every woman get’s her man”, Hallmark/Lifetime/O.W.N “romantic comedies”. -They won’t be able to appreciate it.

WOW. Impressive. Modern. Intelligent. Funny. MORE!!

WOW. What a pleasant surprise! For so many reasons. STILL thinking about how real and refreshingly non-Hollywood this was. Where can we get more like this! When they were seated on the plane together near the beginning, I started to be drawn in because all of a sudden it felt like I was watching a play. I thought, how nice, I bet they love this opportunity as actors to have this much dialogue holding our attention. And it moved forward so well, I was fully engrossed, never left my seat. I appreciated seeing these two actors over 45 years of age, because I hadn’t seen them in anything since they were younger. Great to see the years of life experience reflected in their character portrayals of real thinking intelligent single adults over 45 in today’s world. Spot on too. It was HUMOROUS because it was so REAL! Written from the perspective of a thinking, modern, honest, evolving human consciousness that questions what it’s all about, and didn’t need to resort to lazy old fashioned stereotypes. Bravo. I laughed out loud many times, and noticed that Winona Ryder’s character didn’t laugh except once ever so slightly to just one of the many Keanu Reeves’s character’s direct summations on life, and who he was, and who he thought she was. They were past the age of taking a stranger’s criticism personally. They listened to each other and responded thoughtfully from a place of depth throughout the entire movie. They portrayed two people who were very individualized and knew that they were secure and comfortable with who they were, flaws and all, and that they didn’t need a partner, unlike so many predictable romcoms, full of people “searching”. (Fun as they are, you make the best of what’s offered, but we always wish that they would reflect what’s a little more up to date, independent people coming together in inter-dependence not old fashioned co-dependence.) Lovely that the script was dialogue about who they were and what was happening between them without it coming from a place of emotionality and desperation. And they came to the realization that it may be worth while to pursue a relationship, but it wasn’t with fairy tale illusions that it had to be the do all and end all of their existences, or have any particular outcome. They didn’t need each other, but were open to being in the present moment and moving forward. It wasn’t until the credits rolled that it dawned on me that no one else but these two characters spoke the entire time! I was a little stunned actually to not have picked up on that during viewing, and that’s when it hit me that I had been fully engaged in these surprising characters and what they were going to SAY next. I searched the credits twice to see what book or play this was adapted from, and was surprised again to see that this 2 person film was a 2 person FILM. I hope I didn’t spoil the surprise for anyone, but as much as I love the movies that are my favorites, I’m not interested in seeing most that are offered these days. Actually, I have never written a review, but this was a NEW movie experience. This had me searching to see how I could give it 5 stars and applaud it after viewing on Prime. Thank you! We get what we focus on right? Let’s focus on a standing ovation for “Destination Wedding”! BRAVO.
