    Heartfelt

I was introduced to this series years ago when it was debuted on Channel 13 and fell in love with the show immediately. It made my Sunday nights something to look forward to. So, when the movies came out, it brought all of the those feelings back. I even ordered a second copy for my Mom for her birthday and she loved it.

Good film, but one star off for THAT KISS!

This movie won’t cause much Oscar buzz, except for costumes, but it was an entertaining film nonetheless. The dramatic arc isn’t as intense as some of the stories from the series, but there isn’t time to build anything too big for any one character, and with such a large cast it would’ve taken focus from the ensemble. The film feels like a more elaborate Christmas special episode. The costumes are gorgeous and look more extravagant. The entire film is bathed in a warm light that brings a feeling of security to the story. The cast works well together and slips back into their characters easily. It’s an enjoyable two hours and this disc should be added to any fans collection.I have taken one star off for THAT KISS! Like so many other viewers, I was appalled at the explicitness of that kiss. Clearly the producers are pushing a sexual agenda. To have two people kiss like that in an area where they could so easily be discovered. Ridiculous! I can’t believe they would allow Tom Branson and Lucy Smith to do something like that! And then we get sexual behavior shoved even further down our throats when Edith and her husband tell people that she’s pregnant. We all know that “we’re expecting a baby” is just deviant code for telling the world that the man thrust himself repeatedly into the woman until he successfully ejaculated. DISGUSTING! And for a PG film? Think of the children being exposed to such behavior. They’ll immediately want to try it. And where will that lead?

    Yes! A reunion movie.

My wife is a gigantic fan. She is not gigantic, but here love of the cast and storyline is enduring. I’m pretty certain she has seen the entire series 5 times. It’s her go to show.Me, I’m not tapped into the British personality dynamics, except for the old lady –she is hilarious. I’ll admit, I occasionally get pulled into a scene, but then I’m out again. It had interesting parts, but I’m not a total fan because of my limited intelligence. The movie however is great. I used to love it when the old TV shows did reunions. It’s not a thing anymore. Downton Abby making a movie out of it… super cool. We saw it in the theater and the crowd was too funny. A bunch of white hair shaking at the same time, when laughing on queue. Everybody got it. I felt like I had joined a club. When it came out on DVD she had to have it. Merry Christmas. A great gift. She loves it still. Can’t go wrong for a Downton Abby fan… unless they don’t own a Bluray player.

Nice to visit with the whole gang again

This film was very much fun in some ways, but the story was a bit weak. That said, it was nice to revisit the Abbey. When you watch the series, you get very close to everybody in the show, the characters, all rather well defined after so many seasons. The story here was a bit trite, but it was a vehicle for everyone to do what they do…with one exceptionally funny bit regarding a curtsy instead of a bow. Howlingly funny because it was so well played! We also just saw the second film, too, which I’ve reviewed elsewhere. That film is better, though some didn’t think it was as good as this one. Both well worth the watch. We will be buying the second film, too. That should tell you everything you need to know.

Just outstanding in every aspect. How do they do it?

The Movie…Superb. Compelling. Witty. Authentic. And continuing to advance the character development of everyone you know and love, the movie will engage your intellect and emotions along the way and then astound you with how it miraculously wraps things up so beautifully by the closing credits. And in doing so it still leaves a few welcome possibilities dangling out there giving you hope for yet another film. The artists who brought us the series have transitioned their craft to the 120 minute time-bound film medium with aplomb, and deftly fashioned a story that’s rich and uncompromising, yet crisp and cascades from sweeping vista-filled cinematic introductions to a sublime montage bringing every interwoven story-line to a satisfying close. Quite honestly this film has restored my faith in modern cinema. Yes… apparently there are screen-play writers/directors/cinematographers/editors/actors who coalesce in perfect unison… like a fine orchestra… and can still make good movies. Really, really, good movies. Bravo. The Blu-ray…A Flawless 1080p image delivers striking noise-free black levels, perfect color, and an astonishing amount of fine detail (as viewed on my 100 inch projection system). The only improvement I can imagine might result from a 4K UHD release (lamentable that such a release wasn’t simultaneous with the blu-ray). The lossless audio is flawless as well. A perfect presentation of a masterwork of film.

    Enjoyable and familiar

I don’t know why so many reviewers want to dwell on the gay kiss, we’ve known Thomas was gay since episode 1 and there is nothing over the top or overtly sexual in his scenes.I do think these scenes would have been better in the series proper. But there really is nothing shocking here that we haven’t seen in the actual episodes. I wonder if these reviewers even remember Thomas’ first dalliance? The film really feels like a long episode of Downton Abbey. For me that is fine. There are so many side plots and they are all mostly as fun as you could hope from Downton.Everyone is in character and the new characters are just as much fun!The Dowager is up to her usual antics with Isobel doing her best to keep things under control.Meanwhile, with the royal visit pending, Mary is dealing with the stress of it all and wondering how long they can keep it up.The servants are upset when they learn they have nothing to do during it all and come up with some devious plans. It’s all so Downton that I can’t imagine anyone who loves the show not enjoying this. There are some announcements at the end that make me sad, but all in all, I am looking forward to a sequel or better yet, a new series. We’ve had a few years to rest, I think most of us are ready to go back to Downton Abbey.
