Only one CD necessary. Too expensive.

The enhanced colored version is Vastly Superior to the other one. It’s absolutely stunning! Why would you even want the other one? It’s way too dark! I gave this purchase 4 stars because I payed for something I won’t ever watch. With that being said, I’m so happy i have a richly colored version that I can now proudly add to my Dracula collection.

Finally in color but flawed quality

For those who love this film and are put off by the director’s cut which was decolorized, here it is, in glorious color. Totally worth it and enjoyable for me. But, as others state, there is some framing jitter near the end. Also, you will see two grainy stripes, also near the end, which is just plane wrong on a supposed high quality transfer. I can’t judge if you will find it unacceptable. It is certainly not Blueray quality and clarity. I’m a horror movie fan and this is one of my favorites so I tolerate it. If you are expecting Blueray quality, you won’t find it here and will be disappointed.

    The BEST Dracula!

This is by far my favorite iteration of the Dracula story. Langella is magnetic as the Count! He gets to play along with a great cast that includes the always entertaining Donald Pleasance and Laurence Olivier. There are some truly creepy moments through out along with a haunting atmosphere and production design. At long last the original theatrical release color timing is available and if you’re a fan of that bright 1970’s color look, as I am, you’re going to love this. However, I’m also a fan of what a filmmaker’s intent is with a film and Badham’s more desaturated Director’s Cut of the film is gorgeous as well. (On my initial screening of this release I kept switching the discs back and forth to watch the same scenes over with the two different color grading. Ha!) Something to note is that the theatrical release has not been cleaned up and remastered as the DC has been so there are far more scratches and particles on that “print.” I actually don’t mind this since I kind of enjoy those sorts of imperfections. So while I wouldn’t have minded a more restored effort for the theatrical version it also doesn’t affect my rating of it. Highly recommended.

The original full color version finally restored

Finally, my favorite Dracula film with the full color palette restored. While I’m glad John Badham saw the sense of making the theatrical release available again and cooperated with this release, it’s a shame fans like me had to wait so long. For those unfamiliar with the history, Langella’s Dracula was filmed with a rich color palette that popped onscreen. This is the version many of us saw and remember. With the advent of DVD, the director chose to desaturate the print, rendering a full gray look to the film. Important point, the packaging gave no indication that the film had been altered in any way.Generations have only ever seen the altered, inferior version. Now in this set, both versions are available to consumers play on modern devices. After a twenty year gap, it was a thrill to see my favorite movie again. If you’ve only ever seen the gray version, you have not really seen the film.Edit add on: To the whiners complaining of the quality of the full color version. I don’t know what they are talking about. I noted maybe three seconds of scratches in one moment. There is a disclaimer that the film was restored from best available elements. The print is overall lovely. To give one star to the entire product because the print has the occasional scratch is IMO perhaps unfair to the kind folks who made the effort to make this version available to us at all is a bit disingenuous. It’s just fine. This is a “Holy Grail” acquisition to my collection, I can Elsa a smudge or two.

    FRANK!

Love this version because of Frank Langella’s screen presence. Would have loved to see him perform this on stage when he was in the play!

    John Badham got it right!

This double Blu Ray from Shout Factory features the original theatrical full color version of Dracula (1979) on Disc 2 and director John Badham’s preferred semi-monochrome or “washed out/desaturated” version on Disc 1. The director had a desire back in 1991 to drain most of the color from the movie for the Laserdisc release, feeling it would create a darker feel and noir-ish tone throughout the movie because he originally wanted to film the movie in black-and-white in 1979 but was talked out of it by studio executives who felt an audience in 1979 would be adverse to watching a black-and-white movie. All DVD and Blu Ray releases up until this all-new Shout Factory release featured this washed out version. Well, you know what? I actually prefer the washed out version! When I watched the full color original theatrical version (Disc 2) the other night, something didn’t feel right. I felt like I was watching a totally different movie and I mean that in a bad way. There’s nothing wrong with a full color Dracula movie. It has worked in the past. Think Horror of Dracula (1958), Dan Curtis’ Dracula (1973), Count Dracula (1977) and Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992), to name a few. But I think this 1979 version of Dracula benefits tremendously from the toned down colors. It adds an extra eerie dark and creepy feel to the movie. One thing I noticed though is that the washed out version on Disc 1 has slightly more color than it has had on past DVD and Blu Ray releases. This is not a bad thing. Perhaps (maybe) a middle ground was struck – that is, a little more color was added to the washed out version while still retaining most of the washed out look. I don’t know. I can’t verify this. Just a theory of mine.Another thing I want to mention. For the last four decades a lot of people have been complaining about the sort of “vampire wedding” scene with Kate Nelligan and Frank Langella where John Williams’ score comes to the forefront and there are red “psychedelic” lights that light up the scene and vampire bats flying toward the screen. Personally, I think this is a tremendously awesome scene that is one of the highlights of the whole film. It really accentuates the moment and what is being seen on the screen. I don’t find it intrusive. Besides, it’s not a very long segment, anyway. A lot of people like this scene and I’m one of them. Another example of John Badham getting it right! Some people reviewing this set are complaining about the full color version having stretches of time where the picture quality goes down and becomes fuzzy. I noticed that as well. I don’t know what happened during the transfer process, but it’s possible that perhaps some scenes had to be replaced with footage from lesser sources due to film damage? I don’t know. Hmmm…. But it doesn’t matter to me personally because I’ll always gravitate toward the washed out version. This two Blu Ray set comes with lots of special features/interviews, etc. I highly recommend it!

    The Best Dracula ever made.

The best Dracula movie ever! You won’t be disappointed. Unfortunately, the color has faded since its original release. But still compelling. Frank Langella is to die for.

This movie is INCREDIBLE in color…

Finally accomplished one of my Grails in film watching last night…I’ve always loved the 1970s Dracula, and I rank it with some of the better versions of the story. But the version I first encountered on TV as a small child is not the one that most people have had access to for the past 30 years or so. Director John Badham redid the film’s entire color palette for its LaserDisc release in 1990, meaning that the movie that most people know has been bleached of nearly all color, leaving a tin-type palette of mostly silver, dark browns, and reds. Not entirely a B&W movie. But about as close as It gets. That’s the only version that’s been available to watch since 1990.So I finally ordered Shout Factory’s redux, presenting the original print. For years I thought the color version of Dracula was only urban legend. This movie is INCREDIBLE in color. Astonishing, even.A great case can be made for Badham’s eventual preference for a tintype color palette, because that works fantastically as well for enhancing the Gothic mood of the piece. But that movie is only half of what was shot.Watching this last night was like going from Dorothy staring at her shoes…. Stately, gray Kansas/ to a pastoral Secret Garden explosion.Shades of purple, slate-sky blue…smoky, spectral, eyeshadow-colored smoke… And for the first time ever, in over 30 years… I finally got to see Dracula’s red-lined cloak, as he makes his entrance, over 6 ft tall and commanding, and doffs the thing with a casual, svengali’s flourish.I’d watched Badham’s SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER last year, and thought to myself… Is this man an auteur??Yes, he’s an auteur.I can’t recommend this one enough. See it if you can afford a copy or a rental,Of Dracula 1979, “original theatrical color timing”.

A great version of a timeless classic!

A great version of the classic story! This version with both the original color version and the later director’s blunder cut, wherein he drained almost all the color, is the way to go. At this point, I believe it’s the only way to get the full cover version.Lawrence Olivier as Van Helsing is perfect!
