One of the most popular movie musicals ever made! Funny Girl follows the early career of stage comedienne Fanny Brice, a role that earned Barbra Streisand the 1968 Oscar® for Best Actress. As the film opens, only her mother believes Fanny can make it in show business. When she gets her first break at Keeney’s Music Hall, her hilarious debut as a roller-skating chorus girl gets her hired as a comedienne. A year later Fanny is working for Florenz Ziegfeld in his famous Follies and brings the house down with an outrageous and unplanned number. Fanny becomes a star, falls in love and marries Nick Arnstein (Omar Sharif), a handsome gambler whose luck doesn’t hold up. The film’s many memorable songs include “Don’t Rain On My Parade” and the Streisand classic “People.” Funny Girl (The Criterion Collection) 4K UHD

Witness the birth of a movie star as Barbra Streisand makes a screen debut for the ages in this musical spectacular. From humor to pathos, she hits every note as popular 1920s singer-comedian Fanny Brice, a young Jewish New Yorker whose spirit and supernova talent propel her to fame in the Ziegfeld Follies, but whose devotion to an unreliable gambler (a charismatic Omar Sharif) brings drama and heartbreak into her life. Adapted from a hit Broadway show and directed by Hollywood master William Wyler, Funny Girl hits emotional highs in unforgettable performances of songs like “People” and “Don’t Rain on My Parade”—moments that won Streisand one of the most richly deserved Best Actress awards in Oscar history. Good quality – one for the fans!

The sound and audio quality, and extra features, are all very good. However, the film itself is not my of cup of tea. Given it was made in the same years as Easy Rider and The Graduate, I dare say it has not aged well.

    Defective 4k disc

FUNNY GIRL 4K disc is defective , freezes around 2hr20min mark and continues till it reaches 2hr25min . Very disappointing , disc is not scratched or dirty so I assume it is a manufacturing defect . My advice if you bought it already is to view it asap to see if yours is also defective .

Okay, I won’t say “Hello, gorgeous”

The film has second act problem as the stage version did but Barbra Streisand in her film debut under the direction of William Wyler in a big budget, gorgeous musical. What else is there to say? Hello, well you know the rest.

    Magnificent Streisand movie

Sadly, some Criterion discs have an authoring problem. I’ve gotten 3 copies, and 2 started freezing after Chapter 7, and did not stop freezing intermittently afterwards. Hopefully the 3rd disc won’t have the same issues. Happily, the 3rd copy is flawless, and I was able to watch all of the show. If you have not seen this, please do. It’s the breakout movie that put on full display Barbara Streisand’s amazing voice and showcased her many talents that only became richer, more nuanced, and deep as she expanded her repertoire to include the music of Stephen Sondheim. This movie is truly one for the ages.

    Looks good in 4K

The film looks nice in 4K. I am a fan of William Wyler and this was his last Directorial effort. I, however, am not a fan of Streisand despite her immense talent.

    Remarkable restoration at great value

I have the blu-ray release at only $19. I have not seen it since the flawed RCA CED version about 40 years ago. It’s a joyous movie with generous extras. The approximate 4 hours of extras is worth exploring. After viewing the last interview with Wyler I went on to explore some of his movies which I never saw. Streisand’s interview gives valuable insight on the making of this movie. Now look at the deleted scene on this disk. You will agree it should have been in the movie. Now go on and listen to the original Broadway recording and you will discover that 3-4 great songs were deleted from the movie which should have been included, though additional songs were added. Let’s face it, this is such great entertainment that the musical should have been 3 hours long. Streisand is a unique and rare talent, in fact a musical and theatrical genius.

Great movie. Great UHD disc from Criterion.

Absolutely beautiful image and sound. A very fine UHD disc of a classic film. I am happy to add it to my collection to replace my older Blu-ray disc. Another stellar release from Criterion!
