Malignant’s inconsistent tone undercuts the homage it wants to be
A lot of negative reviewers seem to have misunderstood what the director was trying to do.If you want a review from someone who understood the intent but feels it fell far short of its goal, this is the review for you.Malignant wants to have its cake and eat it too.Essentially Malignant is an attempt at an homage to classic exploitation films with over the top melodrama and extreme violence. The problem is the film is extremely inconsistent in its tone.At times Malignant invites you to laugh at intentionally cheesy dialogue and overacting.Other times Malignant seems to expect you’re taking the story seriously. The film presents 0 charismatic characters and because the movie can’t decide if it wants to commit to the tropes it’s alluding to, it presents a very inconsistent product that is simultaneously cheesy on purpose and self conscious about whether you’re taking it seriously when it wants. The result is a thoroughly underwhelming and predictable story that meanders for over an hour through a lackluster investigative thriller that culminates in approximately 20 minutes of somewhat entertaining ultra violence.Unfortunately even the fun gore fest is hampered by excessive CGI that takes all the impact and viscerality out of what might otherwise have been pretty solid horror violence.I see what James Wan was trying to do.I don’t take issue with the concept or the films it’s trying to pay homage to.The problem is the film felt afraid to commit. As a result there are moments where it’s really impossible to say whether the film itself knows what tone it’s trying to set.Malignant lacks the absurd over the top qualities that lend classic exploitation films their charm for the vast majority of its run time – instead 90% of the film is simply mediocre acting and lackluster dialogue that feels lazy rather than intentionally whacky, despite what they were clearly going for.Combined with a pretty underwhelming finale and a “twist” that could be deduced in the first 5 minutes, I frankly found myself bored.By the time Malignant decided to actually go all in I’d been checking my watch for well over half an hour – the payoff just isn’t all that good and it’s not anywhere near as revelatory as most reviewers chalk it up to be.Malignant is self aware, it’s not badly acted or cheesy on accident – but it felt like a story stuck perpetually at the starting line, afraid to actually hit the ground running until just before the credits roll.

Great twist
Such a good horror movie you don’t expect the twist near the end, reminds me of the movie smile and barbarian, very original and unique story. 5/5 definitely watch if you love horror movies with a great original story.

Did James Wan lose a bet?
An amateurish production with poor acting, cheesy 1980s-era dialog that took itself far too seriously, and a screenplay with all the polish of a rusty old Chrysler. Can’t believe Wan would sully his reputation by attaching his name to this steamer. He either lost a bet, or took a blow to the head, or ate too many Twinkies.

A love letter to 80s horror
James Wan is really good at horror. And this movie is no different. It is a throwback to fullmoon video 1980s, early 1990s style horror. It is suspenseful, but turns into an all out bonanza horror experience. This movie does not take itself too seriously and really has a lot of fun with it. It is supposed to be silly and unbelievable, think movies like puppet master or child’s play, or any other horror movie with a silly premise. Turn off your brain, sit back, and watch some of the best creature feature of this decade.

I mean it’s watchable
I had such high expectations for this movie as most reviews are good, wasn’t a huge fan as to me very unbelievably in a movie that appeared to be trying to be. Not giving spoilers but I wouldn’t recommend, so disappointed glad I didn’t wait until Halloween.

Better than expected
Pretty good horror film. Kept my guessing for awhile. Good kills. Interesting story. The ending is slightly disappointing but not awful or anything. Entertaining horror film. Unique too
