Very close to the original movie. Not sure about the singing and dancing throughout the movie because it wasn’t necessarily. Over all it’s a very good film

Apparently, some people went into “Mean Girls: The Musical,” not knowing it was a musical. I’m not sure how this would occur, but I managed to pick up on this subtlety. Taking over the Lindsay Lohan role from the original movie, Angourie Rice plays Cady, but the rest of the cast, with the exception of Tina Fey and Tim Meadows, who reprise their roles, are new. Overall, it’s a blast, although since I’m from “your mother’s Mean Girls,” generation, I wound up preferring the original. To recap a plot most readers already know, there’s this new girl, Cady Heron (Angourie Rice), who’s been homeschooled her entire life and lives in Kenya, but when her anthropologist mom takes a job at Northwestern, she starts at North Shore High School where she’s befuddled by the customs of the natives. Luckily, she’s taken under the wings of artsy Janis (Auli’i Cravalho) and Damien (Jaquel Spivey), who’s “almost too gay to function,” who give her a crash course in cliques and warn her that the school Queen Bee (Renee Rapp) and her cohorts, the insecure Gretchen (Bebe Wood) and Karen (Avantika) who has a room temperature IQ are bad news indeed. However, Renee, the “Alpha predator,” invites Angourie to eat lunch with them and soon Angourie’s agreeing to spy on the trio. Under the eyes of her calculus teacher (Tina Fey), she’s also developing a massive crush on a male classmate who, unfortunately, is Renee’s ex. And making a play for him is against the cardinal rules of Girl World, or so she’s told.Happily, for Angourie, she’s invited to a Halloween party by her crush, but she is unaware that girls should dress slutty for this event because feminism or whatever, so she shows up as the Bride of Frankenstein. She also realizes Renee is a two-faced life ruiner and joins in whole-heartedly to ruin Renee’s life. This involves something called a “Burn Book,” which the clique used to write mean stuff about their classmates. Of course, this gets completely out of hand, and it’s up to Tina to corral the monster and talk some sense into these young women (preferably before the Big Dance). This involves Angourie taking responsibility for her two-faced behavior (she’s not alone) and relearning the true value of friendship and the virtues of not gossiping. As we are told point blank from the start, “this is a cautionary tale.”I enjoyed the twists and changes on the original dialogue, although plenty of the iconic lines are left in intact. The cast seems to be having a great time, and there’s even a cameo late in the film which may surprise you.
