Original price was: $39.95.Current price is: $19.98.

John Waters’ gloriously grotesque second feature is replete with all manner of depravity, from robbery to murder to one of cinema’s most memorably blasphemous moments. Made on a shoestring budget in Waters’ native Baltimore, with the filmmaker taking on nearly every technical task, this gleeful mockery of the peace-and-love ethos of its era features the Cavalcade of Perversion, a traveling show mounted by a troupe of misfits whose shocking proclivities are topped only by those of their leader: the glammer-than-glam, larger-than-life Divine, out for blood after discovering her lover’s affair. Starring members of Waters’ beloved regular cast, the Dreamlanders (including David Lochary, Mary Vivian Pearce, Mink Stole, Susan Lowe, Edith Massey, George Figgs, and Cookie Mueller), Multiple Maniacs is an anarchic masterwork from an artist who has doggedly tested the limits of good taste for decades. Five for the movie, Three for the Disappointing Presentation

I’ve been waiting years and years to see “Multiple Maniacs” and am thrilled that it’s finally been released on Criterion. I’m not so thrilled that Criterion felt the need to change the aspect ratio to fit 16:9 TVs and modified the original 4:3 aspect ratio of the film. So, yes we do get a restored version of the film. We also get the tops of the actor’s heads cut off from the frame throughout the entire film. That’s not exactly the way John Waters intended. That’s a pretty big disappointment. Therefore, if you still have your old VHS copies and a working VCR, don’t get rid of them. I think if a film should stay in its aspect ratio and not get pulled like silly putty.

Divine, John Waters, Criterion. Enough said!

The restoration on this once quite obscure John Waters title is nothing short of breathtaking. Criterion / Janus Films overseeing this restoration made it a no-brainer on having it in my collection. There is no shortage of extras, as genius director, Baltimore’s own John Waters does his classic must-hear audio commentary.Criterion has gone on to do the blu-ray 4K restorations for Female Trouble, and Polyester – also both must-haves with as equally great extras! My blu-ray player has never been happier!

Gave as a gift to someone who needed it to complete their John Waters collection

Gave as a gift to someone who needed it to complete their John Waters collection. She said she didn’t know that it existed in any other format than VHS and was surprised.

    The movies

Weird, as all John Waters movies are. The sleaze just drips off the screen.

    Great criterion film

How could you not know what you’re getting into when you watch a John Waters film. No less than what I would expected to push the boundaries about religion, sex and gender. From the Catholic flashback of the station of the cross, to the rosary scene and the scenes of a moral acts, it is truly a John Waters film.

Rescored but still required viewing for the beginning of John Waters career….

OK, first a bit of a lore lesson. Mondo Trasho and Multiple Maniacs have long been the “missing” films in the John Waters filmography. Mainly due to the fact that he used popular music from his record collection for the two films, without bothering to get the rights to do so. In the mid-1980s, Waters managed to get a small time boutique label to churn out a super-limited, utterly unauthorized release of both films. But afterwards, both films were deemed “lost” as Waters didn’t have the necessary money or clout to personally clear the music rights, or have a company clear the rights for him in exchange for the home video rights. So for a couple of decades, fans had to make do paying huge sums of money for those limited release VHS tapes or pray they could find ripped copies of them on the high seas of the internet, if you catch my drift.Cut to the late 2010s, as Criterion approached John Waters about getting the DVD rights to some of his films, including these two lost films. Sadly, Mondo Trasho proved to be too expensive to release on DVD (as it only has a couple of lines of dialogue and basically is wall-to-wall music set to the vignettes that make up the film’s plot). Luckily, Multiple Maniacs COULD be cleared; though certain scenes (including the infamous “stations of the cross” sex scene) had to have music changed for the DVD release. This includes losing the musical punchline to the entire sequence sadly.Regardless, Multiple Maniacs is required viewing for any Waters fan as it provides the blueprint for the filth that would come. The movie is a sort of trial run for the Waters/Divine partnership, with Diven’s character in Multiple Maniacs a prototype for the characters she would play in Pink Flamingos and Female Troubles. Well worth watching to see the genesis of America’s favorite filthy director!
