Ann Dowd (born January 30, 1956) is an accomplished American actress with a wide-ranging career spanning film, television, and theatre. Born in Holyoke, Massachusetts, she initially pursued pre-med studies before dedicating herself to acting, earning a BA from the College of the Holy Cross and an MFA in Acting from DePaul University. Dowd began her career on the Chicago theatre scene, receiving three Joseph Jefferson Awards for her stage work. Her screen debut came in 1985, and she has since built an impressive filmography with notable roles in Philadelphia (1993), Garden State (2004), The Manchurian Candidate (2004), Marley & Me (2008), and the critically acclaimed Compliance (2012), for which she won a National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actress.In television, Dowd has garnered significant recognition for her powerful performances. She was a series regular on HBO's The Leftovers (2014-2017), earning a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. However, she is perhaps best known for her role as Aunt Lydia in the Hulu series The Handmaid's Tale (2017-present), for which she won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2017. She has also appeared in numerous other television shows, including Nothing Sacred, Freaks and Geeks, and guest roles in all four Law & Order franchises.Dowd's talent has earned her numerous accolades and nominations, including a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance in Mass (2021), as well as Critics' Choice Award and Golden Globe Award nominations.
