August Diehl is a German actor who has achieved international recognition for his work in both German and Hollywood films. Born on January 4, 1976, in West Berlin to an artistic family—his father is an actor and his mother a costume designer—Diehl was exposed to the world of performing arts from a young age. He is a graduate of the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin.Diehl's career spans numerous critically acclaimed projects. He is perhaps best known to international audiences for his roles as Gestapo Major Dieter Hellstrom in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds (2009) and as Michael "Mike" Krause, the husband of Angelina Jolie's character in the spy thriller Salt (2010). His other significant roles include the lead in the Oscar-winning German film The Counterfeiters (2007), portraying Karl Marx in The Young Karl Marx (2017), and a powerful performance as a conscientious objector in Terrence Malick's A Hidden Life (2019). In the 2024 film The Master and Margarita, he took on the central role of Woland, the mysterious and devil-like figure who arrives in 1930s Moscow.
