The Master and Margarita 2024
The 2024 film The Master and Margarita, directed by Michael Lockshin, is a Russian fantasy-drama based on the celebrated novel by Mikhail Bulgakov. The movie intertwines three central narratives from the book, while also adding a new meta-narrative that directly ties the fictional story to the real-life struggles of the author, Mikhail Bulgakov. The plot is set in 1930s Moscow, where a prominent writer, known as the Master (played by Yevgeny Tsyganov), finds his work censored and a play about Pontius Pilate canceled for ideological reasons by the Soviet state. He becomes a pariah and is inspired by his mistress, Margarita (Yuliya Snigir), to write a new novel. This new work is a satirical reinterpretation of the people in his life, centering on Woland (August Diehl), a mysterious and diabolical foreigner who visits Moscow and exacts revenge on those who caused the Master's downfall. As the Master delves deeper into his writing, the line between his imagination and reality begins to blur. The film's cast also includes Claes Bang as Pontius Pilate and Yura Borisov as the voice of Behemoth, Woland's giant black cat. The film was shot in 2021 but its release was delayed due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and related funding issues. It was eventually released on January 25, 2024, to generally positive reviews from critics and audiences, becoming a major box office success in Russia. Its success was notable given that the film was targeted by some nationalist activists and government officials who saw its themes as an anti-regime stance, which ironically mirrored the very censorship issues depicted in the film.
