Bowen Yang is an Australian-born American actor, comedian, writer, and podcaster, best known for his work on Saturday Night Live (SNL). Born on November 6, 1990, in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, to Chinese immigrant parents, Yang moved to Montreal, Canada, at six months old, and later to Aurora, Colorado. He graduated from New York University with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Yang began his career in comedy as a graphic designer before transitioning to performance. He joined SNL in 2018 as a writer and became an on-air cast member in 2019, making history as the first Chinese-American and openly gay male cast member. His work on SNL earned him a Primetime Emmy nomination in 2021 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Yang has also appeared in films such as Fire Island (2022), Bros (2022), and the 2024 adaptation of Wicked.. In 2025, Yang starred in the film The Wedding Banquet, a reimagining of Ang Lee's 1993 classic. Directed by Andrew Ahn, the film explores the lives of two gay couples in Seattle. Yang plays Chris, who enters a sham marriage with Angela (Kelly Marie Tran) to support her partner Lee (Lily Gladstone) during IVF treatments. The ensemble cast also includes Han Gi-chan, Joan Chen, and Youn Yuh-jung. The film premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and received positive reviews for its blend of humor and emotional depth .
