Charlie McDowell is an American-British film director, screenwriter, and producer, known for his work in both independent cinema and television. Born Charles Malcolm McDowell on July 10, 1983, in Los Angeles, he comes from a famous Hollywood family, being the son of actor Malcolm McDowell and actress Mary Steenburgen, and the stepson of actor Ted Danson.McDowell launched his feature film directorial career with the critically acclaimed romantic thriller The One I Love (2014), which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. He has since continued to focus on genre-bending, character-driven narratives, notably writing and directing the Netflix original sci-fi drama The Discovery (2017), starring Robert Redford and Jason Segel, and the contemporary thriller Windfall (2022), starring Jason Segel and Lily Collins. Beyond film, he has also directed episodes for successful television series such as HBO's Silicon Valley, Netflix's Dear White People, FX's Legion, and Showtime's On Becoming a God in Central Florida. He is also known for his prior popularity on social media, which led to the publication of his 2013 book, Dear Girls Above Me.In his personal life, he is married to actress and model Lily Collins, daughter of musician Phil Collins. The couple met on the set of the film Gilded Rage (which McDowell directed) and were married in an intimate ceremony in Dunton Hot Springs, Colorado, on September 4, 2021. They welcomed their first child, a daughter named Tove Jane, via surrogacy in 2025.
