The Summer Book 2025
The Summer Book (2025) is a moving and atmospheric drama directed by Charlie McDowell and based on the beloved 1972 novel by Finnish author Tove Jansson. The film stars Glenn Close as the Grandmother, a wise and unsentimental woman, and debut actress Emily Matthews as her nine-year-old granddaughter, Sophia, with Anders Danielsen Lie as the grieving Father. The plot centers on this small family as they spend a summer at their rustic cabin on an isolated island in the Gulf of Finland, a tradition they attempt to uphold for the first time since the death of Sophia’s mother. The narrative, told through quiet, meditative vignettes, focuses on the deep and honest bond between Sophia and her Grandmother, exploring the intergenerational experience of navigating grief, the cycle of life and death, and finding solace in the rugged beauty of the natural world. Shot on 16mm film to capture the majestic Finnish archipelago light, the film has been praised by critics as a delicate reflection on loss and the enduring connection between a child and an elderly woman. The US limited theatrical release date is September 19, 2025
