Chiaki Kuriyama is a celebrated Japanese actress, singer, and model, best known internationally for her roles in high-octane Japanese and Western cinema. Born on October 10, 1984, in Tsuchiura, Ibaraki, she began her career as a popular child and youth model in the mid-1990s. She successfully transitioned into acting, gaining early recognition in the Japanese horror genre with roles in films like Shikoku (1999) and Ju-on (2000).Her breakthrough performance came in the controversial 2000 action film Battle Royale, where she played the resolute student Takako Chigusa, which subsequently caught the attention of director Quentin Tarantino. This led to her most iconic international role as Gogo Yubari, the psychotically lethal, chain-flail-wielding schoolgirl bodyguard in the 2003 film Kill Bill: Volume 1. This role instantly cemented her status as an international cult figure known for blending a seemingly innocent look with ruthless menace.Since her Hollywood debut, Kuriyama has maintained a busy career in Japanese film and television, starring in projects across various genres, including Sion Sono's horror-satire Exte: Hair Extensions (2007), Takashi Miike’s fantasy adventure The Great Yokai War (2005), and the successful Library Wars series. She has also pursued a singing career, debuting as CHiAKi KURiYAMA in 2010 before later performing under her birth name, releasing her debut album Circus in 2011. She continues to be an active presence in Japanese media, starring in numerous recent television drama series like Banshaku no Ryugi and Kei x Yaku: Dangerous Buddy.
