Cynthia Erivo (born January 8, 1987) is an English actress, singer, and songwriter known for her powerful stage presence and vocal ability, having been nominated for an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony Award (EGOT) and winning all but the Oscar. Born in Stockwell, London, to Nigerian immigrants, she trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) after initially studying music psychology at the University of East London. Her breakthrough came with the stage adaptation of The Color Purple, where she first starred in the London production and then made her Broadway debut in 2015, reprising the role of Celie. For her acclaimed performance on Broadway, she won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical, a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, and a Daytime Emmy Award for a cast performance. Erivo successfully transitioned to film, earning two Academy Award nominations in 2020 for the biopic Harriet, for which she received a nomination for Best Actress and another for co-writing and performing the original song, "Stand Up." Her screen credits also include the films Widows and Bad Times at the El Royale, and the critically praised portrayal of Aretha Franklin in the TV series Genius: Aretha, which earned her a Primetime Emmy nomination. Most recently, she achieved international stardom for starring as Elphaba Thropp in the two-part film adaptation of the musical Wicked (2024 & 2025). Erivo is also a producer, having launched her company, Edith's Daughter, in 2020, and released her debut solo album, Ch. 1 Vs. 1, in 2021.
