David Zayas
David Zayas is a Puerto Rican-American actor, best known for his compelling television roles, particularly as Detective Angel Batista in the series Dexter (2006–2013) and the revival miniseries, and the ruthless prisoner Enrique Morales in the HBO drama Oz (2000–2003). Born on August 15, 1962, in Ponce, Puerto Rico, and raised in The Bronx, New York, Zayas's journey to acting was unconventional; he served as a New York City Police Officer (NYPD) for nearly 15 years before pursuing his passion. While still a police officer, he trained at the Ernie Martin Studio and began his career in the early 1990s as a founding member of the prestigious LAByrinth Theater Company in New York, where he honed his skills in numerous stage productions, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning Anna in the Tropics. His law enforcement background often led to him being typecast as a cop or a villain in his early film and television appearances, which include roles in The Interpreter, 16 Blocks, and Michael Clayton. Beyond his major roles in Dexter and Oz, Zayas has played notable characters such as mob boss Sal Maroni in Gotham and had recurring roles in other major series, cementing his status as a versatile and respected character actor in American media.
