The Running Man 2025
Directed by Edgar Wright, The Running Man is a dystopian action thriller that serves as a faithful adaptation of Stephen King's 1982 novel, diverging significantly from the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger film. Set in a totalitarian 2025 where the economy has collapsed, the story follows Ben Richards, a desperate man unable to afford life-saving medicine for his sick daughter. With no other options, he volunteers for the nation's most popular and sadistic reality show, "The Running Man," where contestants are hunted across the country by professional killers ("Hunters") for a massive cash prize. Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick, Hit Man) stars as the everyman protagonist Ben Richards. The ensemble cast features Josh Brolin as the ruthless producer Dan Killian, Colman Domingo as the flamboyant host Bobby Thompson, and Michael Cera as a naive tech expert, with Lee Pace and William H. Macy in supporting roles. The film has received a mixed-to-positive reception, holding a Rotten Tomatoes score of approximately 66%. Critics have praised Edgar Wright’s kinetic direction and Glen Powell’s charismatic, grounded performance, noting that the film successfully captures the bleak, cynical tone of King's original novel better than the 80s adaptation. However, some reviews have expressed disappointment, feeling the film lacks the inventive spark of Wright's previous hits (like Baby Driver) and struggles to balance its dark social commentary with blockbuster action. It is widely described as a "slick" and entertaining ride that doesn't quite reach "classic" status. The Running Man was released in US theaters on November 14, 2025. Despite high expectations and a budget of roughly $110 million, the film has underperformed financially, grossing approximately $31.6 million worldwide in its first weeks. It opened to about $16.5 million domestically, trailing behind other holiday releases. As it is currently in its exclusive theatrical window, it is not yet available on streaming. Distributed by Paramount Pictures, it is expected to arrive on Paramount+ around January or February 2026, following the standard 45–60 day theatrical exclusivity window.
