Derek Cianfrance is an American film director, cinematographer, screenwriter, and editor, born Derek M. Cianfrance on January 23, 1974, in Lakewood, Colorado, U.S. He grew up in Lakewood and graduated from Green Mountain High School before attending the University of Colorado Boulder to study film production under Stan Brakhage and Phil Solomon. His career has been active since 1998, with his feature directorial debut being the film Brother Tied, which he wrote, directed, and edited at age 23, and which premiered at the International Filmfestival Mannheim-Heidelberg and was screened at Sundance. He is best known for writing and directing the critically acclaimed films Blue Valentine (2010), The Place Beyond the Pines (2012), and The Light Between Oceans (2016), as well as the **HBO miniseries I Know This Much Is True (2020). His cinematic work often focuses on themes of domestic drama with a broad chronological scope, examining the dynamics of relationships and families across decades, utilizing a naturalistic style that often incorporates improvisation from the actors and focusing on an intimate, "lived-in" quality.
