Flying Lotus

Flying Lotus, born Steven Ellison on October 7, 1983, in Los Angeles, California, is a genre-defying musician, producer, rapper, filmmaker, and the founder of the influential label Brainfeeder. A grand-nephew of jazz legend Alice Coltrane and cousin to saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, Flying Lotus was immersed in music from a young age, drawing early inspiration from jazz, hip-hop, electronic music, and experimental sounds. He first gained recognition with his 2006 debut album 1983, but it was his later releases—Los Angeles (2008), Cosmogramma (2010), and You're Dead! (2014)—that established him as a visionary in modern music. Known for blending intricate beats with rich textures and spiritual undertones, his music often explores themes of death, transcendence, and consciousness. Beyond music, Flying Lotus is also the alter ego behind the surreal rap persona Captain Murphy. He ventured into filmmaking with his bold and controversial 2017 feature Kuso, and continued to push boundaries with his 2025 sci-fi horror film Ash. A frequent collaborator with artists like Thundercat, Kendrick Lamar, and Erykah Badu, Flying Lotus remains a pioneer in both audio and visual storytelling, continually reshaping the intersections of music, technology, and cinema.
