As the two investigate the station, they discover ancient alien terraforming technology that suggests an intelligent, hostile presence. The film’s central twist reveals that Riya’s memories have been manipulated by an intelligent alien parasite; she eventually discovers that the real Brion has been dead for some time, and the version she has been interacting with is a manifestation created by the organism to control her. After a gruesome confrontation where she removes the parasite from her own head and battles its mutated form, Riya manages to escape to an orbital facility, only to realize that the larger space station has already been overtaken by the massive parasitic hive mind.
