He grew up in Los Angeles and initially pursued football on a scholarship before transitioning to music and then acting at the University of Southern California. Whitaker made his film debut in 1982 and has since built a reputation for his nuanced performances in a wide range of films, including "Platoon," "Good Morning, Vietnam," and "The Crying Game." He received the Academy Award for Best Actor for his compelling portrayal of Idi Amin in "The Last King of Scotland" (2006).
