Irshad Kamil
Irshad Kamil is a celebrated Indian poet and lyricist, widely regarded as one of the most successful and versatile contemporary writers in the Hindi film industry. Born on September 5, 1971, in Malerkotla, Punjab, he comes from a rich literary background, having earned a PhD in Hindi poetry after completing his studies in journalism at Panjab University. He began his professional career in journalism and then transitioned to writing scripts for television soaps in Mumbai in 1998 before finding his true calling in film music. His lyrical journey in Bollywood began with films like Chameli (2004), but he gained massive recognition through his frequent and highly successful collaborations with director Imtiaz Ali, starting with Jab We Met (2007) and continuing through Love Aaj Kal, Highway, and Tamasha. Kamil's signature style is defined by his ability to infuse deep, poetic philosophy with simple, conversational language, making his songs universally relatable and profound. He has penned some of the most iconic and emotionally resonant songs of the last two decades, including the heartbreak anthem "Agar Tum Saath Ho" (Tamasha), the Sufi devotional "Kun Faya Kun" (Rockstar), the intense romantic track "Tum Se Hi" (Jab We Met), and the raw angst of "Bekhayali" (Kabir Singh). His prolific work with composers like Pritam and A.R. Rahman has earned him numerous accolades, including multiple Filmfare Awards for Best Lyricist.
