Andrew James Matfin "Jamie" Bell (born March 14, 1986, in Billingham, County Durham, England) is a British actor and dancer who rose to international fame with his screen debut. He was born and grew up in Billingham with his mother, Eileen Matfin, and an elder sister, Kathryn; his father, a toolmaker, left before he was born. Bell's family background was in dance, with his grandmother, mother, aunt, and sister all involved, and he began taking tap dance lessons at age six after initially hiding his interest. He trained at the National Youth Music Theatre. Bell achieved his breakthrough at age 14, winning the lead role of Billy Elliot in the 2000 film of the same name, beating over 2,000 other hopefuls. The performance, about a working-class boy who dreams of becoming a ballet dancer, won him widespread critical acclaim and numerous awards, including the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, making him the youngest-ever winner in that category. His subsequent career has been versatile, spanning big-budget blockbusters and independent films. Notable film roles include the young sailor Jimmy in Peter Jackson's King Kong (2005), Ralph "Iggy" Ignatowski in Clint Eastwood's Flags of Our Fathers (2006), Griffin in the sci-fi film Jumper (2008), the title character Tintin in the motion-capture animated film The Adventures of Tintin (2011), Edgar in Snowpiercer (2013), Ben Grimm/The Thing in Fantastic Four (2015), and Bernie Taupin in the Elton John biopic Rocketman (2019). He received another BAFTA nomination for his leading role in Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool (2017). On television, he starred as Abraham Woodhull in the series Turn: Washington's Spies (2014–2017). Jamie Bell has been married twice. He married actress Evan Rachel Wood in 2012, and they divorced in 2014, sharing one son. He married actress Kate Mara in 2017, and they have one daughter and one son together. He is known to be a big baseball fan.
