Jemaine Clement

Jemaine Clement is a New Zealand actor, comedian, musician, and filmmaker, born on January 10, 1974, in Masterton, New Zealand. He is best known as one half of the musical comedy duo Flight of the Conchords, alongside Bret McKenzie. The duo gained international fame with their self-titled HBO series, which earned them six Primetime Emmy nominations and a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album in 2008. In addition to his musical endeavors, Clement has had a diverse career in film and television. He has appeared in films such as Eagle vs Shark (2007), Gentlemen Broncos (2009), and Men in Black 3 (2012). He also provided voice work for animated films like Despicable Me (2010), Rio (2011), Moana (2016), and The Lego Batman Movie (2017). Clement made his directorial debut with What We Do in the Shadows (2014), a mockumentary about vampire roommates, which he co-wrote, co-directed, and co-starred in with Taika Waititi. The film was later adapted into a television series of the same name. In Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), Clement portrays Dr. Ian Garvin, a marine biologist studying the tulkun, whale-like creatures on Pandora. Initially aligned with the human agenda of harvesting amrita, a substance found in the tulkun's brain that grants immortality, Garvin's character grapples with the ethical implications of his work. His evolving perspective leads him to oppose the poachers exploiting the tulkun, highlighting the film's themes of environmentalism and moral conflict.
