Thelma the Unicorn 2024
Released on May 17, 2024, Thelma the Unicorn is a vibrant animated musical comedy based on the popular children's book series by Aaron Blabey. Directed by Jared Hess and Lynn Wang, the film explores themes of authenticity, the price of fame, and self-acceptance through a whimsical, glitter-covered lens. The story follows Thelma, a small farm pony with massive dreams of becoming a music superstar. Alongside her best friends—Otis the donkey and Reggie the llama—she performs in a band called The Rusty Buckets. After a humiliating audition where they are told they lack "star power," a freak accident involving a truck carrying pink paint and glitter transforms Thelma into a sparkly, "magical" unicorn (aided by a carrot stuck to her forehead). Seizing the moment, Thelma embraces the persona and quickly becomes a viral sensation. She is discovered by the sleazy talent manager Vic Diamond, who manipulates her into leaving her friends behind to pursue global stardom. As a pop sensation, Thelma is thrust into a world of fake romances with internet star Danny Stallion and a fierce rivalry with the reigning diva, Nikki Narwhal. However, the pressure of maintaining her lie begins to take a toll. After Nikki’s assistant, Megan, discovers Thelma’s secret and threatens to expose her, a heartbroken Thelma decides to quit the industry. After a chance encounter with the truck driver who inadvertently "created" her, she realizes that she doesn't need the glitter to be special. She returns to the stage at the SparklePalooza music festival, where she washes off her disguise in front of the world. After singing a powerful song about her true self, she is embraced by the audience and reunites with her bandmates to pursue music on her own terms. The film features the voice acting debut of Grammy-winning musician Brittany Howard as the titular pony, Thelma. She is supported by a comedic powerhouse cast, including Will Forte as her loyal friend Otis and Jon Heder as Reggie. The antagonist, Vic Diamond, is voiced by Jemaine Clement, while Ally Dixon plays the rival pop star Nikki Narwhal. Other notable voices include Fred Armisen as the shallow Danny Stallion, Zach Galifianakis as the Crusty Trucker, Edi Patterson as Megan, and Shondrella Avery as Zirconia. As a Netflix Original, Thelma the Unicorn had a limited theatrical run in select markets for promotional or eligibility purposes, its primary performance was measured through streaming viewership. Upon its global release on May 17, 2024, it became available to Netflix subscribers in over 190 countries. The film reached the Netflix Top 10 lists for kids' content in various regions during its debut month, praised for its catchy soundtrack—composed by John Powell—and its heartfelt message for younger audiences.

If you've never read the book, the movie might come across as new and heartwarming. I read this book almost every night, and what's just a fun story about a pony pretending to be a unicorn and being famous, the movie takes that and is fully bloated of a new plot of her desperately wanting to be in a band and be a singer that's known well, which takes away from the aspect that she just wanted to be a unicorn in the book for the feel of being a unicorn. So my kids didn't like it, and I hate how every kids movie has to be a musical of some sort, it just feels overdone, and the movie comes across as a weird merge of 70s Hollywood with modern technology, which just makes the film odd to me. Thelma tries way too hard to be trendy and aim at kids. And the voice actress does a tremendous job, I guess it just feels off from what the book shows you, it just doesn't feel like Thelma.
