Joel Edgerton is an Australian actor, filmmaker, and screenwriter born on June 23, 1974, in Blacktown, New South Wales. He is the younger brother of director Nash Edgerton. Joel began his career in the Australian television series The Secret Life of Us (2001–2002), earning critical acclaim and an AACTA Award for Best Lead Actor. He gained international recognition for his role as Owen Lars in the Star Wars prequels (Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith) and reprised the role in the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022). Edgerton's filmography includes notable performances in Animal Kingdom (2010), Warrior (2011), Zero Dark Thirty (2012), The Great Gatsby (2013), Black Mass (2015), Loving (2016), Red Sparrow (2018), and The Green Knight (2021). His portrayal of Richard Loving in Loving earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama. Beyond acting, Edgerton has made significant contributions as a filmmaker. He wrote, directed, and starred in The Gift (2015), a psychological thriller that received critical acclaim. He also directed and co-wrote Boy Erased (2018), a drama about conversion therapy, and co-wrote and starred in The King (2019), a historical drama. In 2021, Edgerton starred in the Amazon Prime miniseries The Underground Railroad, based on Colson Whitehead's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. He also appeared in the Apple TV+ science fiction series Dark Matter (2024). Edgerton is in a relationship with fashion editor Christine Centenera, and they have two children together.
