Train Dreams 2025
Train Dreams is a 2025 American drama film directed by Clint Bentley, who co-wrote the screenplay with Greg Kwedar, adapting the acclaimed 2011 novella of the same name by Denis Johnson. The film is a poetic, yet rugged, character study set in the rapidly changing American West of the early 20th century. It stars Joel Edgerton in a highly praised performance as Robert Grainier, an orphaned logger and itinerant railroad worker in the Pacific Northwest who is struggling to find his place as he helps to expand the nation's railroad empire and cuts through the untamed landscape. The narrative follows Robert's life, from his youth to old age, focusing on his tender courtship and marriage to Gladys Grainier (played by Felicity Jones) and their dream of building a simple life together, a dream often deferred by Robert's work that takes him far from his family. The story grapples with themes of progress, loss, nature, and the spiritual cost of building modern America, particularly as Robert is haunted by a tragedy and the ghost of a Chinese laborer whose racist murder he witnessed. The supporting cast includes Clifton Collins Jr., Kerry Condon, and William H. Macy. The film, which has a runtime of 102 minutes, is distributed by Netflix, having had its world premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival on January 26, 2025. It received a limited theatrical release in the United States on November 7, 2025, before its global streaming debut on Netflix on November 21, 2025.
