Kate Burton is a highly acclaimed British-American actress, born Katherine Burton on September 10, 1957, in Geneva, Switzerland, to legendary Welsh actor Richard Burton and producer Sybil Christopher. Raised in Manhattan after her parents' divorce, she initially pursued a diplomatic career, majoring in Russian Studies and European History at Brown University before earning her MFA in Acting from the Yale School of Drama.Burton has had a prolific career across stage, film, and television, demonstrating immense versatility. On Broadway, she has received three Tony Award nominations for her work in plays such as Hedda Gabler, The Elephant Man, and The Constant Wife. On television, she is widely recognized for her critically acclaimed roles as Ellis Grey on "Grey's Anatomy" and Vice President Sally Langston on "Scandal," both of which earned her Primetime Emmy Award nominations. She has also appeared in numerous other popular series including "Law & Order," "Homeland," "The Good Fight," "Inventing Anna," and "The Dropout." Her film credits include "Big Trouble in Little China," "The Ice Storm," "Unfaithful," "127 Hours," and most recently, "The Surrender" (2025), where she portrays Barbara, the grieving mother. Beyond acting, Burton is also a respected teaching artist and a Professor of Theater Practice in Acting at the University of Southern California.
