The Surrender 2025
"The Surrender" (2025) is a psychological and supernatural horror-drama directed and written by Julia Max. The film centers on a grieving mother and daughter, Barbara (Kate Burton) and Megan (Colby Minifie), as they cope with the death of the family patriarch, Robert (Vaughn Armstrong). While Megan is prepared to move on, Barbara, unable to accept her husband's passing, becomes increasingly engrossed in occult methods to bring him back from the dead. This leads her to enlist the help of a mysterious "death doula" (Neil Sandilands) to perform a brutal resurrection ritual. Megan reluctantly agrees to participate, hoping to help her mother through her grief, but the multi-day process spirals into a terrifying and bizarre experience that forces both women to confront their differences and fight for their lives. The film explores themes of grief, trauma, denial, and the lengths people will go to avoid loss, blending emotional drama with unsettling body horror. It premiered at the SXSW Film Festival on March 9, 2025, and was released for internet streaming in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Ireland on May 23, 2025.
